• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Looking for opinions on the K&N filter.

Is it worth the expense to switch. And is there any difference in performance.
Not interested in changing the air box .
Would like Baja rons opinion also.
Tx in advance!!!

I don't know yet.... My 14K is coming up and I am doing it myself. Just ordered the K&N from Ron and will be replacing it soon.

Give me some miles and I will then have an opinion.

My. 02¢'s

it did make a difference on my RS with the stock box. Later tossed the whole thing and went with JT's system but changed to the K&N filter there too...I did have a hindle exhaust as well. Tossed that as well for the Yoshimura R77...fickle you may ask..:roflblack:

I use K&N filters in all my cars, trucks, and motorcycles for a lot of years. In the 2011 Spyder RS-S SE5, it gave me better performance and little more gas mileage and I don't have to buy any more air filters and my Spyder used less engine oil.

The answer is, 'It Depends'.

If you couple the K&N with a freer flowing exhaust system then you should see a little increase in performance and you may see a bit better fuel mileage. If you ditch the air horns and pick up an ambient air source it can improve a bit more.

One thing for sure. You won't ever have to purchase another air cleaner for your Spyder. And the service interval is much longer with the K&N filter.

:agree:.......I just fitted one on my 1330 RT with a custom air intake .......It can be seen at Spyderfest, & or Best Western Coach House......Mike

Here's one very good reason to use it rather than a stock filter.

I've actually replaced my airbox with JT's filter but when I was taking the old one out I found a piece of straw was working it's way up the side of the stock filter. I found 2 more bits in that had already got past and if they could what other grit etc has?

My understanding is that the K&N and Green filters have a different design for the edge of the filter that seals this up properly.

Here's a pic just to prove I wasn't imagining things:

I do have HMF aftermarket exhaust:yes:

I ran the K&N filter then added the Akrapavic two years later when I bough my 2011 RT. The K&N made no difference but when I added the muffler there was a small power gain. I took the K&N out and reinstalled my stock filterfor a test and again, no difference so I added the aftermarket air filter.. major difference..... in sound but no measureable power increase . I then went all out and added the cat delete, again major difference .... in sound but no power gain.

I confirmed all my tests by running timed quarter miles and only the muffler made any real difference. Even after adding the fuel controller I gained very little, not enough to justify the expense. I tried to get the sound level down by wrapping the headers and the Y-pipe but it hardly made any change, and the fuel controller worked havoc with my on board computer causing constant codes until I took it out. I then put everything back to stock other than the muffler, including the Y-Pipe and the air box. It sounded like it was silent after that, lol...

Long story short quarter mile tests proved that the $4,500 I spent on power enhancements made almost no difference other than the muffler which made it a 1/2 second faster, mostly in the in the mid range. Unfortunately no one was set up dyno the setup locally. I also ran some standing starts against a food friends stock model and was shamed to see how I only gained a bike length from 0-70.

I built many a power car back in the 70s-80s and the results were often very dramatic, cutting seconds off of the timed runs and believe it or not just changing the stock rad fan to a flex fan made one of the biggest improvements for a very few dollars. With the fuel injected engines later on and the mileage requirements set by the government a lot of the easy fixes were done at the factory. I moved over to diesel then since there was a lot of untapped potential, for about $5K I doubled my F250's horse power and close to tripled the torque. I added .5 horsepower for every dollar spent, huge difference. By the way I had the diesel dynotuned as well as timed in the quarter so the results were documented.
