Just got my Spyder... Now I have questions.

Hello all...
I just became a Spyder owner on Sunday!:2thumbs:
I've never owned a bike before and since I'm an avid snomobiler (thus the name sledhead) I thought the Spyder would be a good choice.
I've only put on 30 miles but man I think I made the right choice. :2excited:
I have a couple of questions for you experienced folks.
Here goes:
1.) I bought a Yellow 2008 GS premiere edition #498 with 306 miles on it. It came with the Hindle exhaust, fogs, trunk liner, "Official Launch" riding Jacket, Mono seat cowl, Extra front rim and Custom seat skin (not installed yet... that's tonight). My question is did I pay to much @ $12,000? The thing is spotless so I thought I did pretty well.

2.) After just 30 miles of NON-Highway driving, it's obvious I need a bigger windshield. Since I blew my savings on the bike itself, I don't have a bunch of cash to do accessories. So with that what shield do you folks suggest I look for? BRP Ultra Touring??? Others?? Also if anyone is looking to get rid of one don't hesitate to shoot me a note!!! or any other accessories you might think would be helpful.

Anyway.. that's it. Thanks for reading!!!!
Later.

Don't know prices well enough to know if you got a good deal or not. Prices change season to season and from geographic area to another. I paid $14,000 for an '08 SM5 with slightly more miles, and different "extras" last year around this time. FWIW I thought I got a good deal at the time.

As for windshields, there are many options. Look on the front page at the sponsor vendors. Many here have the ESI CHAD and are happy with it. Madstad has one that's adjustable too. There are sliders, and fixed windshields out there to please just about everyone.

welcome and:congrats: on your new ryde!!

welcome I love the Cal Sci Windshield, economical and does a good job without being a hugh sail!!!!:roflblack:

Sounds like a pretty decent price to me. welcome

There are some great threads on the site regarding windshields, etc. The search function is better than asking any expert since you will get different opinions and experiences on all the choices out there. Windshields are one of those items where research can help you a lot because of all the variables in rider height, length of inseam, seat and sitting position, whether you have risers or not, etc. Good Luck and good riding!

After doing a little research on the windshield, check the For Sale part of this web site for some great deals on used windshields, etc.

:congrats:welcome I think you paid a tad to much but who cares what i think ! Do you like the bike is the only thing that matters and if you think you got a good deal then :spyder2: on. Enjoy .

We have over 34,000 miles on our 2008 SE5 and the CalSci XL has been with us all the way. I prefer it to any other after market. But, that's just my opinion.

I think 12,000 is a very fair price, you got a brand new machine!

I have a XL Calsci windshield I will sell you - if you are interested PM me

congrats on the Spyder - they are alot of fun. Get used to meeting people non-stop...

:2thumbs: Seems like a fair deal.welcome enjoy your:spyder:

welcome and :congrats: on your new Spyder.

A deal is when the seller is happy with the money they got for the item, and you are happy to have it fo the amount of money you paid. Nobody else can really be the judge of that. I am pretty sure you got more smiles within the first 30 miles than you ever thought possible though.

Have fun and ryde safe.

Welcome!

I think it sounds like you got a good deal.

As far as the windshields go, I had a CalSci and like it, but it didn't do the whole job for me and I ended up going with RoboBrackets - an adjustable windshield. Here is the link to my first posting on it: http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14374&highlight=robobrackets

There are other adjustable windshields out there, but cost and Mark at Madstad really sealed the deal for me. You can also just buy the brackets and use them on any other shield you have.

If you search the forum, you will see lots of discussions on windshields - they make a huge difference, but depend a lot on how you ride, your size, helmet, and the general conditions you ride in. After going through a few shields, I finally went with an adjustable one - I will probably never go back to a fixed one.

Thanks for all the well wishes!!!! You folks rock!!
Sure sounds like this is the place to be if you're a Spyder owner!!

I did a bit more research on windshields after my post and you guys were right.... a whole bunch of opinions out there. Which is cool.
I guess I'm just going to have to get my hands on one and try it.

Greetings from another rider who just bought a Spyder on 3/20 in Chandler, AZ. As for your deal... You wanted your Spyder, you were satisfied enough to make the deal and you drove it home. Hopefully the first of many miles. Don't second guess your decision. Enjoy it! I spent about 2 months doing research and looking for a good deal. Our bikes are comparable... '09 SE5 w/1451 miles, custom seat skin, fogs, trunk liner, tank bag and Yoshimura exhaust. I paid $12,400 and was very pleased with the deal I made. I reached out to the forum also for advice on windshields. There are several opinions. But more Spyder riders that responded to my request favored the CHAD than any other brand. I also received positive comments on the GIVI, the EVO III and the Can AM Ultra Touring. But I also received comments similar to some you received suggesting that we may end up making multiple purchases before we settle on the one that suits us best.

Good luck & Enjoy the ride! And remember, it's a great deal if your Spyder puts a smile on your face!

If you think you made a good deal, then you made a good deal. Who cares what anyone else thinks. Drive it like you stole it!welcome

I have 3 Spyder windshields in my current collection. The stock one, the BRP Sport Touring, and the Givi. At 5' 9", with only a BRP Riser Block, the Givi works great for me. I may switch back to the Sport Touring during the summer in order to get more air flow, but must admit that I love the fact I am not a bobble head due to the wind buffeting with the Givi.

Everyone is different and the windshield is one of those very personal choices.
