I was there just over a year ago. When you see how wide & flat Omaha Beach is you can understand why they called it 'Bloody Omaha.' A lot of flat sand and nowhere to hide.

Thanks Bob, I last visited as a teenager in the late 70's, brought tears to my eyes then to think of what the landing troops had to go through, and that was before so many, many visceral modern D-Day movies and series, Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, etc

Have you ever seen the movie THE LONGEST DAY or read the book? The book is better than the movie as to just what they dealt with.

One should also remember that there were dozens of "D Days" throughout WWII and Korea although Normandy is remembered as the largest. The Pacific war had most of them and although not as large as Normandy they were often much bloodier due to the nature of the assault.

As another member mentioned, "The Longest Day" was a very good story of that day.
