iPod Connectivity

I am interested in being able to control an mp3 player's power, volume, and song selection via the bike's handlebar audio controls. It's my understanding that an iPod device is the best way to go, but I don't want to sink alot of money into one. Does anyone know if there is an adapter available that would make an iPod Shuffle compatible with the 30 pin cable supplied by BRP, and would it do what I want it to do?

I have two older iPods, one a 64GB & the other an 82GB, both of which work fine with the cable available from BRP. I can control them from the handlebars with no problem It is my understanding that Apple changed from a 30 pin to some other configuration for their most recent devices. Who knows why they did. An MP3 player, which uses a different cable, cannot be controlled from the handlebars. Best you can do is set the MP3 to shuffle & plug it in. Hope this is helpful, & good luck.

Thank you. I have been using a non-Apple mp3 player through the audio jack, without being able to control it remotely. I can also use my GPS unit's media player and control things via the GPS unit. There are adapters out there that will allow me, I believe, to plug the iPod Shuffle into the BRP supplied 30 pin cable...I just don't know if that will enable the remote control feature via the handlebar's audio controls.

The BRP 30 pin connector works well for my I Phone 4S, my 30 GB I Pod and my older-than-dirt, 120 GB almost original I Pod.

With every device I can change the play list, advance to the next song in the queue, control volume. Changing the play list is tricky but once you get the hang of it things are pretty easy.

if you just look around you can pick up a 4th generation Ipod touch for around $40. Really not much of an investment and you can put allof your music on there and just use it for your spyder. that's waht I did. Problem solved. I have a feeling any adapter cable you find to go between an mp3 player and this apple connection is probably going to cost you at least half that and not allow you to control it on the handlebars.

I would hit ebay or amazon . Maybe even go to a local pawn shop and seee what you can find. I actually got mine in scottsboro al. at a place called unclaimed baggage, where they get stuff from the airlines and then clean it up and resale it. 8gb 4th gen ipod touch for $36.

I recently bought an iPod shuffle for $50. Not knowing any better it's an iPod right! To my dismay there is no way in hell that will ever work the way I want. It will work as a MP3 player but cannot be control from the handlebar controls. It has nothing but the 4 conductor headphone jack. Every is done through that jack and there is no adapter except for the usb one that comes with it. The store was nice about it and took it back.

What is needed is someone with a good understanding of the Apple iCrap products to tell us which products and generation will work. I was looking at the ads for used and have no idea what I am looking for. Also what defects are acceptable. For example I have seen several ipods advertised "works good except the button does not work." Is that important or not. :dontknow:

My 2014 RT S SE6 manual says that the following iPod devices are compatible...

Touch 2nd 3rd 4th generations
Nano 5th 6th generations

I was initially looking to boot strap the cheaper Shuffle via a 30 pin - USB adapter, but instead I am going to take bcoulter19's advice and shop for a used/refurbished device on the BRP manual list that uses the 30 pin supplied cable.

My Issue Resolved

Just ordered a refurbished 4th generation iPod Touch. Following up on bcoulter19's advice, that seems to have been the best option given what I wanted and how much I was willing to spend. Thanks again, everyone, for the information and suggestions.

Ok, I went looking and found what I think is the info everyone is searching for, I tried compiling it all in one location here for easy reference.

All of the following devices use the Apple 30 pin connection;

iPod Classic- 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th generations
iPod mini- 1st and 2nd generations
iPod Nano- 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th generations
iPod touch- 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th generations

iPad 1st generation
iPad 2
iPad 3rd generation

iPhone 1st generation
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S

The following devices use Apples new 8 pin connector, also referenced to as the "lightning Connector".
- Side note, Apple does sells a 30pin - 8pin adapter, reading other posts throughout the forum it seems as if these off brand adapters are hit and miss with the connectivity to the spyder, I cannot say for sure though. Maybe someone with experience with these adapters could add some feedback.

iPod touch 5th generation

iPad Air
iPad 4th generation

iPad mini 1st and 2nd generation

I couldn't really find any info on the shuffles, but if I remember correctly the 1st gen shuffle connected just like modern day thumb drives do by plugging directly into the USB port, after that I believe apple switched to the cable that sync's through the headphone jack. Also iPod Classic 1st and 2nd generations are pre-30pin, these 2 generations will work using the headphone jack only, so they kinda fall into the same category as the shuffles.

I have two older iPods that I use for my Spyder, my SO's Prius & my Truck. They work just fine for that. My truck is a 2011, and my RT is a 2014 - all require the 30 pin connector. Plus, since I had the 2010 RT when Apple dropped the 30 pin connector, I bought two new Shuffles with the old connector - stashed for future needs.

I also have the Apple adaptor to convert the newer devices to the 30 pin connector, but the added connector is not very robust, and I would worry about it on a long trip.

I have purchased a USB plug for my power outlet, and use that to charge my phone or iPad on trips (new connector)

Fyi info to share the standard brp ipod dock is 30pin, & works goodthe 30pin to lightning adapter fits and works my iphone5 np on my ST

Connection cable

Hi there,
I am relative new here, just bought my Spyder RT from 2011.
Now wanted to connect my Ipod but there is no connection cable with the machine.
I managed to find it via Amazon but, guess what, they do not ship to Holland
Anyone out there who can provide my usefull info on how to get this darn cable?
