Info on the front trunk release on the 2014 RT-S

I just brought my new-to-me 2014 RT-S home over the weekend and when we picked it up from the dealer as we were going over the bike noticed that the front cargo release button was not working. The guy that was showing it to me said it must be broken and he'd mention it to the woman who I had actually bought the bike through. I received a message today stating that the RT-S did not come with the electronic release button. I found some specs that says it did come with the release.

SO - I am asking any of you who might actually have a 2014 RT-S - did it come with the release button? Or not? I don't want to make waves if it didn't, but if it did then I feel it should be working as I bought it used from a CanAm dealer.

The dealer has said since I sent her the spec sheet I found that she will make it right by ordering and shipping me the unit, but I am feeling guilty about it.

Thanks,

Not sure...

They did have a model that was released without the electric frunk release. I think you could retrofit one but it was not standard. They did get a lot of backlash from it and the dealer should really know this. I do believe it was the 14's....:dontknow:

ELECTRIC FRUNK RELEASE

They had a lot of problems with it , so BRP dis-continued it..........I have posted ( on Spyderlovers )(many times ) how to put on a CABLE release to do the job........This is because I firmly believe the IGNITION KEY should NOT be used to open the Frunk or the Seat.......If it breaks ( and they have ) it's a $ 400.00 + dealer repair & if your warranty is over....well you do the math :dontknow:.......Mike :bbq:

14 RT-S did not have electric frunk release. Only released through key. I did order the kit from BRP and installed myself. Good instructions but really involved

Mine never had a button. I sure hope you weren't sold a 2013 or someother year. YIKES.
I used to think the button/solenoid thing sounded good, then I hear about the glitches
with it, and am glad I don't have it.

It can be added to the 2014.

I know two people that did it.

The wiring harness is there so all you need is the switch and the solenoid at the trunk latch. So you just order those parts.

It has the switch

It does have the switch, but the dealer says the previous owner put it on. Thanks for all the help - now i really feel guilty.

You may have the solenoid too!
Can you take a picture of your front trunk latch area and post it... I can tell you if you have it.

Frunk Release

I have a 2014 RT-S, bought it used and it just has the key release. Works great and I can't honestly see why it would break the key. Now the seat.......well......

The frunk is opened via the ignition key.
You push down on the key and turn CCW.

If the catch does not release so you can lift the trunk, the cable may have come off the latch or needs adjustment.

Bruce I see you are here since 2015 ........well back 5 years ago BRP said it was fine to have the Drive Belt tension at 900 N's ( or whatevers ) until the Shaft bearings started dis-integrating.......Nothing ever happens - UNTIL IT HAPPENS.....and if you have faith in the strength of the ignition mechanism and the key I'm OK with that .....I'm NEVER going to be waiting for a tow truck because mine BROKE and then waiting a month or so for it to get FIXED........Mike :bbq:

I realize that anything CAN happen at the most inopportune times. That's why I have both keys with me at all times. I'm just saying that it works perfectly the way it is. If that should change, I'll probably change my tune, but so far, it works like a charm. I do read that a lot of members do have a problem and I don't understand why, unless earlier years did have a problem, which my 2014 doesn't.

Do make certain that the frunk gasket is firmly seated all the way around, particularly when you remove bulky items that might drag on the gasket on the way out. I use the drop test on the frunk lid when closing it; if it doesn't drop into the latch and lock the latch, the frunk is too full of stuff. Start cramming stuff in it and you can have problems getting the latch to release with the key. YMMV.

I have a 2014 RT-S. No frunk actuator button. Tried to order one and the order was cancelled because they said the switch was discontinued. I use my key to open the frunk and have saved about $100 in the process.

Don't you enjoy paying more for less? :yikes:

Again, I know 2 people that ordered the solenoid and switch as replacement parts from previous year models.
BRP does sell these parts.
