I Hate My Brake Pedal - Mike Mas

Not sure what BRP was Thinking - Coming from regular motorcycles, all my brake pedals were always less than an inch from my foot so in the event you need it to hit it quickly its right there. On my F3T both the stock pegs and floorboard upgrades put the pedal in a position where you have to physically lift your foot off the floorboard then over to the pedal to hit the brake. Anyone riding in city traffic will know just how miserable and tiring this really is. Here in N Georgia we have massive amounts of deer so when I'm in an area of crossings - I like to keep my toe over the brake for safety.

With this problem in mind - Here's a quick fix for your floorboards to get your foot over the pedal without lifting your foot off the floorboard. Lucky for me the hardware was long enough so I was able to put a 3/4" aluminum block under the floorboard which raised it up enough where I can now keep my heel on the board and over the brake pedal in the event I need to brake quickly.

Remember guys we're not driving cars here - every split second can mean making it or not!

Regards

Great idea and thanks for sharing. I put a wider pedal that helps me a lot but I still have to pick my foot up to use it. So, did raising your floor boards 3/4" make enough difference for you? And you said you used the same hardware that was there?

Thanks for the reply - I just came back from a ride and you won't believe what a difference it made I can keep my foot over the pedal without lifting my foot.

While its OK to leave it the way it is, I still have another 3/4" block to add after I get longer hardware. Of course I left the left side untouched!

Thanks - Mike

Another Option......

The other solution, which obviously costs more, is to install a pair of Lamonster's RIP boards. As part of the overall improvement "package", they effectively lift the boards and give you a better angle as well.... No more lifting your foot to get at the brake.

Since it's a F3 try posting on that Forum. There is a way to lower it been discussed many times on F3 Forum. The guy I ride with did his.

Since you're raised the floorboard: is there any chance of that limiting the amount effective pedal travel? :dontknow:
Good point. I would suggest that any time you modify your braking geometry, take it for a test run and make 1 or more panic stop(s) to be sure you still have the braking power you thought you had. It's possible to obstruct pedal travel and not know it until you need all of it, when maximum braking demands it.

Thanks for the reply's - seems to me every Spyder I've owned (which is all of them) has the same exact problem . . . .

Thanks

Mike Mas got a Spyder?

Hi Mike, Finless bob here :)

Another RC heli guy gets a Spyder :)

Nice idea. When I was helping BRP give demo rides at dealers this year, this was a complaint with some people.
The base F3 has pegs and doesn't have this issue because your foot easily rotates on the peg to get at the peddle.
The F3T with floorboards you have to lift your foot from the flat placement. I noticed this myself too.

Happy riding,
Bob

Not having to raise your foot to brake has always been a priority at Seal Floorboards. With such a huge surface, it's easy to brake with your heel OR toe without lifting your foot. Riding in comfort is a goal, but riding in safety is a priority.

The first time I sat on a spyder I noticed that I had to lift my leg to break. That was on an RT. This issue was one of the main reasons I got an ST. The position was a little more relaxed and I could get to the break better. Now that Ive ryden awhile, I dont even think about it. I just break. I dont even want a larger break peddle because It takes away space from normal cruising. I once had a situation where I HAD to do a emergency stop and my legs were both on the web Pegs. I didnt even think about it. Adrenalin took over and I got to the break petal in plenty of time.

Hey Bob good to see there's another RC head in the group - where you been - I've been on one ofthese things since their inception LOL

Its not a question of thinking about it or how hard it is - its a question of safety, that extra second could mean life or death.

It's a poor design period - they should have incorporated a hand brake on the right side as well. Honda has ABS with both a pedal and lever - what's up BRP trying to save a few bucks at our expense. Hmmm sort of reminds me of the "Belt Idler" they left off to save $20 bucks!

Here you go BRP a real hand brake with ABS!

I hear all these complaints about the Spyder brake being too far away compared to 2 wheelers.
AGREE!
BUT
Do the same people complain about their car's brake pedal being over an inch away :D

Just saying and BTW - great idea! ;)

Bolt sizes

Hi Mike,

Have you found out the longer bolt sizes needed to add another 3/4 " block? I would think you'd want to do this on both sides so we don't feel off center.

Pap,

No luck on the bolts local but I live in a redneck town - I'm going to try NAPA they might have them.

Right now with the 3/4" difference it does not feel uncomfortable or even wrong!

I can tell you this, it has made all the difference in the world for me, I can ride with my foot over the brake with no problem. The brke was all wrong to begin with - its not humanly possible to keep your heel on the board and angle your toe that high.
