How to find a way to disconnect the SE5 automatic down-shifting

Has anybody found a way to disconnect the SE5 from down-shifting by itself? I would like to be in charge of this, just like the up-shifting. Thanks Denny ;)

You *are* in charge of it. It only does it if you don't.:D
And it gives you plenty of time to do it yourself as well....:doorag:

Oh, and welcome!

The simple thing is to downshift BEFORE the Spyder does. It will only down-shift (or upshift) when the gear you are in is not "appropriate" for the RPM/MPH you are moving at. The Spyder will only downshift when you are about to "lug" or stall out the engine.

If you are constantly being surprised by the Spyder downshifting, you are running at a gear that is too high for the speed you are going. As others will most likely chime in on, they will say the Spyder's transmission/rotax engine really "likes" high RPMs.

Your request is pretty common for new riders, but after you get used to the gear/throttle ratios, you will probably find this a non-issue.

May I suggest you read the Owner's Manual. It contains a lot of useful information that could prevent headaches in the future.

I can see where you are coming from on this. My wife and her girlfriend both complain about being startled while cornering. The bike will suddenly downshift right in the middle of it. This happens while in town at slow speeds. I have told them to downshift to 2nd before the turn while braking, then accelerate through the turn. It pretty much eliminated the problem, but it does still happen to them now and then.
We use to own a Bombardier Traxter ATV with auto mode transmission. It was a gear driven hydraulic transmission with electronic shift. You had the option of either manual or auto shifting. When you chose auto though, it shifted up and down by itself. This became very predictable so you kind of knew when it was going to shift. I can see where some might like this type of option, and Bombardeir had this technology 10 years ago!
It would more or less be one of those things you get use to like the Foot Only brake. Could they have done it different, or better, maybe. Do we settle or get use to what they give us, yeah. If not we improvise with mods.

Thank You

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I have read the owners manual, the shop manual, and the electrical schematic. I know how the system works, I'm just trying to make the system better for me. I was wondering if anybody had made any modifications to there SE5 transmission? I appreciate the comments and suggestions and I will continue to research this project and keep all your suggestions in mind.

Thanks Denny :spyder:

I am a pretty aggressive rider and I am always shifting my SE5 - and I cannot tell you how much I like it.

But, if you are looking at modding it, you might be better selling and getting a SM5. Personally, if I could only change one thing on the Spyder is its transmission - in general, I think the Spyder has way too much torque and it really seems to guzzle gas when you are in its sweet spot of RPMs. But, I am beginning to think that wishing for a "cruise gear" is a hold over from all those years of riding on two wheels. While I still wish it had one, if I were to change it somehow, I would miss the current set up. That is what happens when I am on my BMW.

Every once in a while I get that unexpected shift as well, and it kinda makes the throttle go loose for a second. I just take that as a reminder that I need to keep the rpm's up. I used to have a Honda ATV with an automatic 3 speed, that thing was always shifting at unexpected times so I always ran it in semi auto mode where I had to tell it to shift up and down. It still sucked. Thats why when I went to buy the Spyder I was intent on getting a manual. But the dealer had both an SE and SM demo and really wanted me to try the auto too. I was completely sold on it after that. I really like the way it waits as long as possible to down shift, as it gives me plenty of time to downshift myself, which is what I usually do. It just catches me sometimes when puttin around, much better than getting caught in too high of a gear and finding yourself in a bind.

se5 downshift

imho, 3k rpm is the best level for manual downshift. if you do it regularly, you'll forget the auto downshift it's even there. normal driving, i still like to allow auto downshift into first.

Thanks for the hot tips! I will give it a go! Perhaps in the end I will just get used to it and like it? Thanks! Much appreciated! Denny :2thumbs:
