HMF Exhaust doesn't fit 2011 Spyder

Questions

New member
I just purchased and received a new carbon fiber street series slip on for my 2011 Spyder and it will not fit correctly.

Anyone else have this issue? I didn't think there was a change from the 2010 to 2011.

Fortunately, being a mechanical engineer has it advantages. I have a solution that should work out fine and I will have it made on Monday.
It is just a short link that lowers the pipe about 1.50"

There have been a few if not all HMF users on here that have needed to add an extension to the muffler hanger. Sounds like yours was also contacting other structure with the muffler hanger that was included like the others?

Once you are finished with creating your solution, please share it with the rest of us. There are other owners that have had issues that I am sure would like to see what you come up with, and it would help future purchasers as well.

Has anyone contacted HMF about this situation yet? I know it seems to be showing up a lot on here.

Hi Mike! Yup, I was wondering the same thing. I am not sure if adding a little length to the 90 so that it lands more correctly would do it or if it needs a slight change of angle on the hanger bracket. Either way, I have not heard that anyone has made contact with HMF. You want to think that someone has called, 'cause alot of guys are having issues...

I emailed them and never heard back--- guess I'll do it again....

If it is a problem where the two pipes gets clamped down it might be ovaled (out of round). Mine was. Take it to a muffler shop and they have a tool to flare it out. If it is a problem where you mount it with the bracket, put the bracket to the OUTSIDE and it fits perfect. NO EXTRA PIPE IS NEEDED FOR THE INSTALL !!! I love my HMF pipe. If you need a pic of my install, let me know and I will post one.

Never mind. I'm posting pics of the install anyway for all you engineers that can't figure it out. Engineers crack me up !!! :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack: :joke:

I also didn't like the way my HMF fit. I am curious what the exact issue was with tman52804's mounting was though. Just from the basic description of "it will not fit correctly" and his thoughts of fixing his issue by lowering the muffler 1.5", he had a different problem than some of us had with the muffler hitting the parking brake assembly.

Wow, I bought the first hmf they made for the Spyder and mine fit great. I lowered it a little to make room for my givi bags on the phantom. Other than that, it was a direct bolt on replacement. I really can't see a difference in the 2011 frame, mounting points or anything. I guess its so minor that I couldn't see it at the dealer when I looked.

:dontknow: I wonder if they changed something in the way they build their 90 as my HMF is pretty close to the swingarm and going over bumps did allow my parking brake actuator to hit the bottom of the HMF. I solved my problem by removing most of the parking brake hardware. I would still buy another HMF though. :2thumbs:

I don't know what the issue some of you are having is, but if you put the bracket to the outside it doesn't even come close to the brakes or swingarm. Sorry about the dirty Spyder, I just got back from a 400 mile road trip.

This is what i did also no problems at all and my Givi bags clear it also?

You two must weigh a lot less than me. My HMF bracket is mounted on the same side of the passenger peg bracket as yours but my muffler would (often) hit on the parking brake mechanism while riding over bumpy roads.

If yours is mounted excatly like mine, there is a issue. As you can see in my photos, it does not even come close to the brake assembly. Even if you bottomed the shock out, it still would not hit. So weight has nothing to do with it. I ride 2 up all the time. Almost 300# worth of humans between my wife and I. It has to be a design difference in the pipe between yours and mine from HMF.

Maybe my rear shock has a lighter spring. I'm up to the max spring setting and the HMF would hit. I know that Firefly had the same issue as me.

I see as I look more closely at your picture that you have that little aluminum spacer in yours. I installed it that way at first and it wasn't enough clearance, my muffler hit the parking brake. I tried a longer spacer and I didn't like how it felt when I tried to force things together that way.
