High Mileage Spyder Value

I'm just curious. Does anyone here on these boards that rides often and runs up lots of miles, lets say over 50,000 miles or more, has or has tried to sell or traded your spyder and had to take a loss on value of your spyder? Myself I ride my spyder to work everyday when the weather permits me to. To work from my home is 20 miles, so that is a total of 40 miles per day, usually 6 days a week. I also take many road trips for pleasure rides. Anyhow, I've now got over 52,000 miles on my 2008 GS. It has treated me well and it is in really good condition. I keep it maintained and clean. Most folks that see my spyder can't believe I have that many miles on it.
Recently I've been dealing with lower back and left leg pain caused by a bad case of sciatica. I'm on short term disability for a while. This has given me some time to think about whether I want to keep the GS, trade or sell it. My dealer would take it in trade on a whole sale value. At this time I don't know what that price will be. It's just hard for dealers to sell these spyders with high miles when there are so many low mile spyders out there selling. I know if I try to sell it, I will have to take a loss on the value because of miles. I'm also considering keeping her and make it a collectable. Maybe my son can inherit it. Myself, I'm looking at the RTS or a RT LTD for a more comfortable ride. I like the ST LTD as well, but the RT's would be a better choice fo carrying a passenger. If I trade I would want to have the trailer as well.
I guess my case in point is with all this is, you buy these expensive toys to ride and enjoy them. I don't worry about the high miles, and consider the loss on value as the price we pay to have fun. Either way, once my sciatica issue is cured, I will hopefully go out and enjoy riding again. If I do It may just be on something new!...You just never know with me!

I had about the same miles as you and mine ran better than new. I had a ton of extras but I sold it for 10K. If I didn't have all the Corbin stuff I would say 8-9K or so. Good luck with your sale, I think the red should sell fast. :doorag:

I'm sorry to hear that sciatica has bitten you!
The important issue here should be getting yourself healthy again; everything else can wait!
Do you NEED to sell it?
Why not wait until you're feeling better; that'll give you more time to kick around your options...

I was at a dealer the other day and saw a 2008 with a little over 34K on it. It had: fog lights, back rest, handle bar risers, new tires, touring windshield, caliper trim kit, BRP comfort seat, and custom grips on it. They were asking 11,200 for it. With all of those options I would seriously consider it. Besides: number one, it is a rotax engine, and number two, it apparently has minimal issues if it has racked up that many miles. Should be a darned easy sell. Hope this information helps you out a little.

Just sayin.................

This is the Spyder Adrian is speaking of. It is loaded with goodies and no way would I get rid of it. That thing is near mint. The girl on the other hand isn't............ :roflblack::joke:

Hope you feel better soon my friend.

There's someone on this board looking for a Spyder, but he can only pay $8500. I don't remember his handle or where he is. Maybe these 2 SpyderLovers can get together!

But, curiously, many people advised that potential owner he prolly wouldn't find one at that price that isn't a dog. I think as there become more and more Spyders on the road, we'll see more and more with high milage for sale. Like any other motorcycle, the maintenance history is everything.

Original odometer, running twice over 62,138 miles (went to zero miles) before the 2012 update, 71,710 actual reading .
Federal Truth in Mileage Act (TIMA):The Federal Truth in Mileage Act (TIMA) requires sellers to provide actual, truthful odometer readings and to disclose any known inaccuracies. TIMA makes odometer fraud a felony. Failure to disclose that an odometer has been changed or repaired (altered in any way) and/or falsifying mileage documentation will result in fines and/or imprisonment.
Was BRP the original seller?

When my wife decided she didn't want to keep the Spyder, my biggest negative feedback was it had less than 2k miles on a 2010, so something had to be wrong with it. I only got a few low ball offers after four months, so I brought it home and plan to ride it as much as possible. I figure if low miles was worth low ball offers, than I could clearly have some fun for a couple of years, then sell it for the same. There's a chance my wife would change her mind about it in that time too.

Sometimes, there may be no winning with regards to selling these toys. You just may get the same money for it two years from now, when others have close to the same miles. Sounds like you may have some time, before making a decision. Just funny how you see the same issue with a high mileage one as I have with my low mileage Spyder!

I was shocked to read this my friend, sure is a beauty tho

That is a good looking bike. I sold a 2008 Rs with 45,000 miles on it a couple of years ago for about $10k.
A couple of points:
1) Sciatica problems are curable. I was side lined last year with a similar complaint. It turns out that it was bursitist (sp?) that was inflaming the sciatica. I am curing the problem by sitting on an old man donut whenver I sit. Humiliating but effective.
2) It is not that difficult to turn an RS into an RT look and act alike especially if you are riding one up. You certainly have a good looking unit to start with.

Last year I bought another 2008 RS with 3100 miles on it for $10.5 K. So I am basically back on the same bike with 42,000 less miles and that is what you are going to be fighting if you sell your bike and have to deal with 'loss of value'. The beauty in having this second RS is that I was able to add just the things I wanted and/or knew that worked.

I would keep the bike if it is not a financial burden.

Randy, You've GOT to be more careful! She's a nurse; that means access to stuff that could really put you in a hurt locker! :yikes:

I had over 52,000 miles...removed the dual exhaust, Corbin, CB, and other stuff...keep all the electric...lights...it was pink flames on a spider web...I got $10k...there were alot of calls to low ball...but only one came to see it and bought it

I've got over 55,000 miles on my 2010 RT and I think that I am probably past the point of selling it. I considered it (briefly) but I don't want to take such a big hit when there is nothing wrong with it. Instead I think I will keep it forever! With the trips I have planned for this summer I could easily be at 100,000 miles by summer 2014.

From KBB

The mileage on you Spyder is not that high for its age. It may seem high, but perhaps that's because others don't ride there's as often.

Here's what KBB has to say about mileage and motorcycles. FWIW

7. How does mileage affect the value of a motorcycle?

Kelley Blue Book does not give dollar figures to add or deduct based on mileage for motorcycles. The reason for this is that the condition of the motorcycle is of far more importance that the number of miles it has been ridden. A motorcycle that has been ridden several thousand miles on surface streets will have less wear and tear than another motorcycle that has the same number of miles but has been ridden over rougher terrain. It is between the buyer and the seller to determine how much to add or deduct from the Kelley Blue Book value based on the condition of the motorcycle.

If you actually decide to sell it. Wait and sell it to someone that understands the reality of KBB's explanation. my2c

Maintenance is key! If you have complete service records and are up to date with recalls etc, someone who understands the care and feeding of machines will pay you the appropriate price. Too often I see bikes where the owner is just tired of it and start missing oil changes, or the tires are on their last legs, ... they just want it gone. Run away from those. A well maintained machine is preferable to one that's sat in a shed only ridden to church on sunday whose owner doesn't have a clue where the oil goes.

I don't usually offer pricing advice these days, but totally agree with what has been said above.

Any time you are going to trade, the dealer has to make something off the trade as well as the new vehicle being sold. How much, depends on their margin.

I know of two "brand new" as in 1 mile and never titled--2009's being sold at my dealer: a RS for $11,000, and a RS stealth version for $14,000. The 2008's seem to be going in that $10,000 range depending on all the finagle factors.

High mileage, as long as it is not a mechanical nightmare--should not be a problem. A good track record, means a good machine.

Let us know what you decide.

Randy, your just too funny!

If I do decide to sell the spyder, do you think maybe Holly can pose on it for me as in the picture above to help me make a sale?...
:roflblack: :roflblack: :roflblack:

Lots of good advise from all the above. I do enjoy that GS, and have added a lot of goodies on it over the years. It certainly would be hard to part with. Right now though, even if I wanted to ride it I woudn'd be able too. My left foot is all numb and I don't have any strength to lift or push on the shift lever. My next spyder will be an SE5 for sure. First and foremost is for me to heal and get my health back. Being out of work and on disability is not something that I'm enjoying. I will know more next week when I go see the spine specialists. Thanks for all the support everyone! It's appreciated.
