• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

hard start when warm

So what do I need to do if it keeps happening and is it a dealer issue or can I fix it. Thanks, Mike

Two "owner" fixes have been reported.
One is clean out the canister and re-install.
The other is a simple modification that removes the canister completely (not a good idea in California).

A search on here should find both.......as well as an expensive dealer fix that involves paying for a new canister.

I see you are in Florida. I bought the bike from a guy in Tampa last year.

What does the canister do? Is it an EPA think. I always removed the EPA stuff on all 3 of my Yamaha viragos since it just made it run worse.

anyone hear ever remove one? Thanks, Mike

CHARCOAL / EVAP CANNISTER

In the 1330 RT models the canister won't / can't get contaminated ( unless you flip it :gaah:& maybe not then ) ... If you look at a Fiche' that shows the Gas line routing it shows that it's not possible ..... despite what some other Poster says ...on the V-twins it was an issue .... but you have an RT ...... Mike

Some RTs have V-twins too.
But you might very well be right.
I wasn't paying very close attention to the details on the threads about this.

wmh9680: Do a search and read the reports. There is no reason to be modifying things that are not causing a problem.......but checking the canister should be fairly easy.

I know this is not the same thing but i had a car do that once and it was traced back to a bad battery cable that goes to the starter. Probably not in this situation but just trying to throw some ideas out there. Hope you get it solved.

Hard starting meaning-
1- motor cranks over freely with no fire
2- motor cranks slow with no fire
3- motor cranks and hit and miss to stall when started.

just trying to narrow down possibilities.

Cranks freely with no hit. I just went out for about 3 hrs and temp was about 90 and came home and shut her down and she started right up and again 15 minutes later. Whether it was the topping off or not I will not do it again. Hard to teach old dogs new tricks. Thanks, everyone. Hope it is a thing in the past. Thanks again, Mike

Like I said in my post #23 .... the 1330 is designed different and it can't become contaminated from gas overflow ....the hose system was re-routed .... vapors can rise but GAS will not ............Mike

Where is it?

June 13th of 2014, with 1 mile on it, the salesman, Vinnie, told me to not "top off the tank". But then he added maybe not, he wasn't sure if this problem was fixed with the '14's. It was a problem with previous RT models. I have ridden this bike lots of miles and do most of maintenance work. But I don't know where this canister is. The dealer where I bought it says they've replaced several canisters. But I'm cheap and don't want to leave the bike away from home if I can do it myself. Besides, any day my Spyder isn't here, I don't get to ride.
I am getting surging also when the engine is cold. Maybe this canister cleansing will fix this too?
Thanks to all.
Hey Joe, want to come over to help? I know your '13 RT-L is much different, but it's still fun getting your hands dirty, and under that tupperware it is.

And yet you do it anyway. :lecturef_smilie:

Once the fuel gets into the vapor canister, you're screwed.
It then needs to be cleaned out or replaced.

Another symptom of that is unstable idle and surging at constant throttle.
