GS/RS fuel filter caution

Just got thru changing my fuel filter. This is the filter to stay away from Purolator F29160 . I installed it and cut the bike on. Started leaking where the filter was put together. I had remembered a friend telling me he had one leaking, so I gave him a call and sure enough same filter bought at Advance Auto. Went to NAPA and bought P/N 3095 fuel filter. This filter is made by Wix company. Installed and all good now. I'm afraid of the Purolator brand. Might not leak when installed, but could begin to leak later which would be bad. Don't know if this same filter is used on the other models, but just in case use OEM, Wix, or the NAPA filter. JMO

The Spyder uses a high pressure fuel system. Not all fuel filters are designed for that kind of pressure. Just because it fits does not mean it will work properly.

That was suppose to be a cross reference filter for the Wix 33095.

thanks for the up date !

these tips we get , are a big help , especially if one was thinking about " oh heck I will just go pick one up " ... for me , o.e. m. parts is about the best way to have piece of mind, that something like, a fuel leak on a great ride would be not a fun day ...

Hi David,

Re: a cross reference filter

Quite often 'a cross reference' only tells you that it will fit.

Question: Why not just get the filter from your Spyder dealer? :dontknow:
How much of a price difference is there?

Nearest dealer 1 1/2 hrs away and their parts are made of gold. Price of filter is $21.95 plus tax. NAPA $7.95 and with my rewards points $2.95 plus tax. Of course money lost on the Purlator filter. Mark that off as learning experience.

I have used napa 3095 filter twice with no problems

That is what's on there now. Looked on the box and it states made by Wix filters. I bought the bike used and the OEM filter looks to be made by Wix also. Same writing, same indents on one end.

My reply was generic. Not specifically referring to the Purolator filter you purchased. I know that the low pressure and the high pressure filters look pretty much identical. It can be hazardous to get the wrong one. Usually, the high pressure versions are of a heavier steel than the low pressure ones.

If the Purolator you purchased is indeed designed for a high pressure fuel system, then it is surprising that it leaks. Big liability for the company. Not to mention the potential hazard to you and your Spyder.

I really couldn't find any info on the Purolator. I had found where the Wix was tested for 60 lbs. Ours puts out around 50 +/- 3 psi. So pretty safe with the Wix. The Purolator started leaking in the seam where it is put together. Just wanted people to be careful on filter replacement. Also had to use fuel injector hose clamps to make it seal. Regular worm clamps had a sip. Had run into this problem many years ago on a fuel system.

A good head's up in any case. I'm sure it will help a number of people avoid the same issue. I don't think most people realize how much pressure there is in our fuel system. About twice what we put in our tires.

Technical specification page 567 fuel system operating pressure is kPa 350 (PSI) 51. His might be 20 but mine is around 50 or better. Try and remove the filter once the key is on and fuel pump pressures up. Turn the key off and remove it. Fuel spray quite high.
