Greetings from the beautiful Pacific Northwest! I am a new member of the forum and I have some general questions that may have been answered before, but like I said, I'm a noob. First, a bit of back story:

I am in my early 30s and I fell in love with the Spyder the first time I rode it last year. I have been searching for a trike for a few years now, wanting to get back into riding regularly. In June 2004, I survived my second motorcycle accident when I had to lay a Goldwing down. I am pretty sure I broke my hip, but I refused treatment at the ER when they refused to take my health insurance. The hip has healed since then (although a bit wobbly), but the psychological damage was done. When back on two wheels, leaning to the right was a major issue. My brain was constantly telling me that the bike was sliding out from under me, even though I "knew" it wasn't. Mentally, I just couldn't take riding on two wheels again and sold my last bike. That was three years ago, before I relocated to the NW, and the itch to ride again has been huge. I looked at standard trikes for a long time until I rode the Spyder in September last year. It was a sweet and easy ride and I had no psychological fear of the bike coming up from under me. I was hooked. I wanted one. If only Uncle Sam's Infernal Revenue Service would comply, I could have a down payment.

Long story short, in the next couple of weeks, I will be buying my first Spyder. Here are some questions that I have:

1) There is only one dealer in town and two in the entire state. Should I buy from the guys in town (the seem OK) or should I head somewhere else?

2) I have seen some people speak about negotiating an extended warranty. How would I go about this and from what vantage point should I negotiate (or argue)? I've never had to do this before as all the new vehicles I've ever bought were bought with true employee discount pricing (not the crap they advertise in commercials).

3) What should I be on the lookout for when it comes to buying a Spyder? I want the SM5.

4) I want to add a bunch of accessories from Kewlmetal and No Magic Neon. The dealership in town are not distributors. Would there be a way I could convince the dealership to order the accessories for me and tack it onto the loan to save me time?

Any thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated. I check the forum daily, but I just don't have as much time to spend on it as I want.

Yes, I know it rains 200-250 days per year here. If the Spyder will help give me back the sense of freedom I miss from two wheels, I can put up with a little rain.

Greetings, all. This is a great forum and I am so glad to have found it.

welcome I think you will be happy with your new spyder. I would feel the dealer out, do they take the time to talk to you and have a positive attitude when they see you coming? If they do and the price is fair I dont think that I would have much of a problem with them.

I believe I'd get some feed back on the local dealer from other Spyder customers. Doesn't hurt to shop price, and get back to the local guy if he's got bike(s) on the floor. The bikes are not as tight in most markets as they were a year ago, and there are actually dealers in some markets with bikes on the floor who are willing to deal on the price. I have a buddy in New York state who bought two demos from a dealer at a good discount for he and his wife. (Story similar to yours: long time Moto Guzzi rider, had a "get-off" a couple years ago, got bunged up. and really lost the "fun" of riding. He say's the Spyder has brought it all back, with none of the anxiety.)

Not sure I'd tack a lot of extras on the loan. I was always told that the borrowed amount on the vehicle should never be worth more than you could sell it for if pinched. Saves you from taking a beating on the resale AND still having a loan balance at the end. You almost never get anything extra for installed accessories on resale anyway. The Spyder is just fine to ride "out of the box", and it's fun at add accessories one or two at a time as you can afford them, and it keeps the "new" feeling going!!

Welcome to the madness!!!:2thumbs::congrats:

-------if you have a "good" local dealer, hang with them-----I had to give up my Honda ST 1100 because it became too heavy and worrysome---and I have gotten to realy love this Red/Black Spyder SE5----I feel most of the freedom of two wheel riding and skiing on the Spyder, and 10X safer----SSSS

welcome
I'm new here too...I'll hopefully be purchasing this summer...don't have info on your area...just wanted to tell you that I'm getting the Spyder as a result of safety concerns (plus they're just plain cool)...oh, and you couldn't have found a better resource than this site...the ppl here are as friendly and nice as can be...made me feel like a part of their family from the get-go.....

welcome

I have heard good things about SK Northwest but you also have a dealer in Redding, Ca and a few in Seattle area. I would phone a few for sure to make sure you get what you want at a fair price. Wouldn't worry about the accesories as Kewlmetal and NMN can ship it directly to you.
Good luck.

welcome You will absolutely love the Spyder over other 3-wheelers! I've gone from two wheels to three - best thing I did! :spyder:I had the Harley Tri-glide ordered - my husband is a Harley guy - bought my Spyder and two days later the trike arrived! I rode almost every trike combo out there before deciding on the Spyder - then one day I was lucky enough to demo the SE5 and the manuel one back to back - ended up with the SE5 - ALOT of fun! :agree:I would add the extra's after you get your :f_spider:.

welcome

Here is my 2 cents on the your questions:

1) I found that buying from a local dealer let me build a bit of a relationship with them. They now give me discounts on other gear that I need when I walk in because the recognise me. Of course, they still needed to have a good price. Down here in San Diego most of the dealers have several Spyders on the floor or in crates. I bought in January and was able to negotiate 700 bucks off MSRP and no dealer fees.

2) I think most dealers will offer the extended warranty. I picked it up as I use the Spyder as a primary vehicle. I am not sure if the price was negotiable, but you could likely use it to negotiate other fees out.

3) I was basically looking for friendly service from a relatively close dealer (service and repair needs) who would sell me a red Spyder for a good deal. I have a red SM5 and love it.

4) Hopefully you will have better luck than me here... I have checked with several dealers here in San Diego including the one I purchased the vehicle from and none would install the aftermarket mods. I was told that if it didnt come from Can Am, they would not do it. Hopefully that will change. I know NMN said they have at least 25 dealers across the country installing their mods.

Good luck!

Arjay

I am not worried about the installation of the mods, I was planning on doing them myself. What my main concern was whether or not they would actually order the parts for me (my local dealer is not a distributor of Kewlmetal and NMN) and possibly tack it onto my loan when I buy the Spyder.

I would like to use my local dealer as I have independent confirmation from this board that they are pretty good.

I am in luck then. SK Northwest is the dealer in town. That's where I did my demo ride and thoroughly enjoyed the service I got there. I did not feel pressured to buy one on the spot (as a car dealer would) and they said to come back in when I had the down payment. I think I shall be paying them a visit in a few weeks.
