I have been using the IOS Program on my iPhone. It can act as a GPS tracker ie. it shows your current position on a map and shows your path as a blue line on the map. It also captures your speed and altitude; at the end of your ride you can save your ride data as a 'track'.
Tracks can be shared with other IOS devices, where they can be replayed, and numerous metrics will be displayed.
The basic program is free, and a range of enhancements can be added for about $20.00/year.
Give it a try if you are bored
