Going To Finally Buy A Spyder But Need Your Help

Run away from the 2013...

I'm sure there are folks with a 2013 that really enjoy them. However, I went through exactly what you are debating last year. I made a deal on a 2013 only to find out the heat issues and recall when I got home. The new design on the 2013 model was not BRP's best engineering effort. I cancelled the deal the next day and started looking again for another dealership (I felt misled and lied to). I was almost ready to pull the trigger on a 2015 RT limited SE6. But I asked the new dealer if it made sense for a new rider like me to buy a used bike and save a little cash. He had a 2012 RT limited SE5 with very low miles for almost half the price of a 2015. Except for the performance difference it was a no brainer for me. I bought the used 2012 and absolutely love it. We had a blast this past year and look forward to many years of enjoyment.

Now, if budget is not an issue, then I would buy a newer model (new or used) with the 1330 motor. I say this after listening to forum members for the last year. If you have never ridden a Spyder before it may not be a big deal. The gas mileage difference alone is admirable. I feel like I'm always looking for a gas station on extended rides with my 998. Highway performance is a bit smoother and passing semi trucks is much easier with the extra power and gear ratio on the 1330.

What are your riding habits/intentions? if you are a spirited rider and expect to do a lot of touring, then the newer 1330 motor models are probably what you should be looking for. If the dealership you visit doesn't allow test rides, run like the wind and find another one. Ride both to help with your decision. It's your money and nobody should tell you how to spend it. There are many great opinions in this thread. Let them help guide you, not convince you. Best of luck and report back (with pictures) on your decision. Welcome aboard!! -Rick

:welcome: Everyone will have an opinion about which bike to buy; YOUR opinion is the only one that matters!
The truth is: having ANY Spyder beats having none, and by a long shot! nojoke The 998-equipped bikes might require more maintenance, and have some protocols that must be followed... But they're still GREAT bikes.
If you can find one that has overheating issues firmly dealt with, and the price is right: go for it!
(But my opinion is screaming that the 1330s are better bikes! :D)

I agree wholeheartedly I traded my 2012 RTL in on 2015 RTSs because of the 1330 Engine and low maintenance. In five months I put almost 9700 miles on it.

I would say that anything above $16k is too much for anything older than a 2014. There are deals out there for a 2014 or newer for less than what you say they are asking for the 2013, and they still have a warranty. If the budget isn't there for a new $22k, 2015, don't get discouraged. There are still options for getting the 1330 in a 2014 or a used 2015 for under $20k. It may not be a limited, but you can do the chrome upgrades and GPS at a later date as funds allow. Good luck in your search.

My 2 Cents Worth Of Advice

A brand new 2015 RT Ltd when they first came out had an MSRP of nearly $31,000.00. At first they came with a 3 year warranty. Then it went to 2 years. You get the picture. I saw the price drop to $29,000.00 to $27,000.00 etc,. Your price of $22,000.00 for a NEW( but now leftover since the 2016 have been released)with a 3 year additional warranty is a pretty good deal IMO. It's early winter in some parts of the country, so you could hold out to see if the deal gets better. Some waited too long and the leftover '14s vanished. It's your money and your decision. Good luck.

Hello Everyone,

I am new here and have been looking at Spyder's for about a year now and I am ready to buy one but I am not sure if I should go with new or used. I like the price of used but do not like no warranty and as for the new it has the warranty but the price is much more.

I have found a nice used one but not sure what to look for on a used Spyder.

The used one I am looking at is a 2013 RT-S SE5 and it has 9000 miles on it and the dealer is asking $17,999.00. It looks to be in very good condition and I cannot find any issues with it but not sure what to look for on it. Also the dealer will put on a new rear tire on due to the ware on it for N/C

I am also looking at a 2015 RT Limited brand new with 3 year warranty and the dealer is asking $22 and change.

Any feedback or input is welcome please.

Thanks in advance for you help.

I would definitely go with the majority of the comments and get the 2015 model ASAP. Try and beat the dealer out of some more dollars and/or the very least - an extended warranty. And welcome to the Spyder world. It will be the best decision you ever made in your life.
I'm on my 3rd Spyder - had a 2010, 2012 and now a 2014 RT Limited and each time was an upgrade on model, features and engine.
BIG F

Agree But!

I think I would have to agree with the majority that say go for the 15. There is one aside, all be it minor, the 2013 sounds like a motorcycle.........the 2015 sounds like a blender!:roflblack::roflblack:

There is really no big differences between the 2014 and 2015 models on the RT..A color change is about it ..and a 590 GPS that is now obsolete..

Good Luck on whatever you decide..

How about used price AND a warranty?

I will sell you a perfect condition 2013 RTS SE5 for thousands less than that dealer AND it will have a BRP Factory warranty through Jan 2019. See my add posted in the For Sale section.

What did you do with WasWinger?
You mean my Blue RT? That's the one I'm getting ready to sell by taking off some of the farkles to put on my '14 RTS. It'll be a few weeks before I'm ready. I'll put an ad in CL in Vegas for a while, then Phoenix, then when it's closer to riding season and if I still have it, up here. Of course, I'll list it here on SL too.
