Gas Tank

I have a 2013 RT-S and experienced a gas fume issue the other day when ryding. I filled up the tank (no over flow and not even up to the metal rim) and drove the mountain twisties for about 15 miles. I stopped for a break and smelled a very very heavy gasoline odor. So much so that my friend on another bike said that you better not smoke near my bike. The odor continued for the 15-20 minutes or so that I was there. I was scared to even start up my bike again.

Questions......what this odor the result of boiling gas or an issue with the evac canister and purge valve?

Does anyone know of a spray type "insulation" that I could apply to the gas tank? If there is no such spray/paint product what type of heat shield would you recommend to apply to the gas tank?

If it went away then it sounds like you Evap canister did it's job. It was full of fumes not gas and just took awhile to purge.

My opinion based on experiencing the same thing on my 2011 once.

Take your spyder to the dealer and let them figure it out. JMHO

Isn't there a valve somewhere in the system that has to open up to let the magic happen?
Could that be sticking a bit?? :dontknow:

What is it you expect the dealers to do? Its a design defect not a parts failure. The dealer cannot redesign the bike. Until BRP issues a service bulletin or recall to address the boiling gas issue, it will not get fixed by the dealers. Properly insulating the tank, the exhaust and improving air flow in the engine bay will likely fix the issue but not until BRP issues it. In the mean time you are on your own.

Please understand that you can overflow to the emissions canister without overflowing the fuel tank or filling all the way to the fill baffle. There is no way to know whether or not you did, short of removing the canister and weighing it, or destroying it and examining the inside. Filling too fast, boiling fuel, or even sloshing a full tank going down the road can do it...especially if the tip-over valve isn't working well. Hopefully your problem is exactly what was mentioned...fumes to the emissions canister and an open purge valve, which is normal when the engine is off. Having the odor go away after several minutes is a good sign. If the canister gets full, the odor can linger for months. If the canister ever received liquid gas by accident, the charcoal is probably ruined, which will increase the strength of the odors and the time they linger. Odors in any large quantity from an emissions canister means it is not doing the job it is supposed to do. That makes it a waste, IMO.
