Suggest you look at the tip by "Tip from Luke (Blue Dog) RT" near the bottom of the following page of Martins site in Australia:

He got someone to drill a 3/16 hole in the bit you're planning to remove and this was enough to allow him to fill the tank. This seems a safer bet than removing it completely though you'd still need to watch for sparks etc.
As Martin said my worry would be the venting canister you could do a canisterectomy as well (good article on this in the DIY section)
