Fuel Issue

Not sure if this is in the right part of the forum, if not let me know. However,r the issue is this, I used to be able to run a ways before needing a fill-up. The last few days I've been lucky to run 60-90 miles on a tank. Now one time I'll admit I was running a little faster then normal, but most of the time I'm running 75 at around 5-6K RPMs. Am I doing something wrong all of a sudden what's the deal? Thanks everyone.

I'd love to help.................but I have no clue what you are driving !!!!! :dontknow: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:......Mike :bbq:

Losing fuel

I'm guessing your previous mileage was somewhere between 150 and 200 per tank? So your down more than what could be attributed to poor mileage or bad riding habits. You must be losing fuel somewhere.

Sudden drop in MPG.:hun: Narrow down the variables.... Use Same station for. Gas, same octane, try to get more mindful of your RPMs, use the cruise controle. As always check air pressure in tires. How long ago was your last service, Close enough to next one to get done early & check fuel & air filters? To be sure:coffee: Ask dealer tech if others have been showing up with same question, can simply be bad gas:banghead: Wouldn't hurt to run injector cleaner thru a tank or two. But best to keep accurate notes.*trip meter, brand of gas, type of riding per tank***also suggest ethical free gas. http://www.pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov=MO I see your not to far from Pitbull.may wanna just pay them a visit?
the mileage wont increase right away but has been good:thumbup: G'luck

:agree: Are you burning off fuel, that may have had some Stabilizer added to it? :dontknow: I have always found that the first bunch of tanks of fresh fuel each year give me horrible mileage. I've come to decide that it's the result of having dumped Sta-bil in the tank...

need more info

I will assume, being you posted this under GS/RS that is what you ride. And as stated, riding habits will show a difference in MPG. As well as fuel grade. But, it would be more helpful if we knew what you MPG was previously. If, as stated, between 150-200 miles per tank, and now that figure is cut in half..there indeed may be cause for concern. But, as also mentioned, we need more info.

It is difficult to fill the Spyder to the same point every time. Especially if you are using different nozzles which dispense at different rates. But that still probably would not account for the size of discrepancy you're having. But it could be a factor.

Yikes...!!

That's strange at best. How many gallons are you putting in. Could be a bad Guage reading but if leaking you would smell it and see it. Then there could be the off chance someone is ryding or siphoning your gas....:dontknow:

I always fill my gas tank by sight. About 1/4 inch below the ring and stop. It takes a couple tries to stabilize the fuel at 1/4 below the ring.

Old gas with stabil, or stations still using the winter blend. Very noticeable here, I always get less mileage off the winter blend--but not a little as you are indicating. If it does not improve soon, a dealer should have a look at finding the problem.

I suggest checking the oil - has the level risen or does it smell like gasoline? If so, it would indicate crankcase dilution from either a rich running condition or incomplete combustion - either of these will cause a drop in fuel mileage.

I apologize for lack of information, I'm riding a 2012 RS with around 13K miles on it. I have been using "Mostly" the same station and have been using the same grade of gas, I run straight regular because of how much cheaper it is. I know the recommended is 91 I believe. I've checked my oil, level is good, clean, and doesn't smell like gas so I don't think that's an issue. I haven't run any stabilizer in it, and I didn't know anything about a "winter-blend" of gasoline so that's news to me. Before I was probably able to get between 130-170 to a tank, depending on if my wife was with me. I've checked the air pressure and I used to run them around 25-30 well the book calls for 15 in front and 30 in back which is what I run now. I just had a new battery put in a few weeks ago and I do most of the service myself due to the high cost. The only thing I haven't checked, and am unaware of how to check is the fuel filter, and I believe i had a new air filter put in when I had my vacuum line bust last year (That job a dealer did) and I think they replaced it then so I wouldn't think that it would be bad yet. Hopefully this helps with the information, sorry again for lack there of in the beginning.

Lower front tire pressures will increase rolling resistance...
But not enough to make the difference that you have described.

.. Your 998 will run fine on 87 octane gas.....using the " miles between tanks of gas " method of knowing your gas mileage is about as accurate as the BRP gas gauge meaning " Not Very "....you say between 130-170 per tank, well that's a 40 gal. difference. You have a LOW total mileage spyder, I'm surprised the vacuum line went bad.....I doubt the gas filter is an issue or the air filter.......How is the sound of the engine ??? how does it accelerate ???.........You could run some " SEAFOAM " in the gas to see if that clears this up.................But,to know your gas mileage , set the Odometer to zero fill the gas tank ....when you re-fill set the ODO to zero- fill the gas tank.....Take the miles you went and divide by the amount of gas you put in--- this is your MPG's for that distance traveled...............Since you live in St. James the nearest dealer is " Cow Town " in Cuba, they are one of the best in the USA. If you can't figure this out they will.....Mike :roflblack:

You sure someone isn't sneaking in at night and siphoning off the gas for their lawn mower/snowblower ?:roflblack:
( I know you lock your garage and take the Spyder key with you. Just funnin'. )

So someone I work with (I work in a shop) said it could be where I get gas. He noticed that his own mileage went down in his car. I find it hard to believe that I could lose that much mileage just with gas. I'm at a loss as to what it could honestly be now

Where u buy gas and octane do make a big difference.

Is the station still on winter blend. Seafoam will not hurt

Want to take a second and say thanks to everyone who commented on this post. It'x been very appreciated, I'll run some seafoam in and see what happens next. Though any recommendations on how much to run in a tank that size?
