There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. front fender support arm broken

Hello everyone,

I have a 2008 (premier edition) Spyder. I am the original owner, put about 30k miles or so on it. A couple of days ago I got a few miles from home and the fender support broke right off, leaving the fender basically flapping around. I crawled home at a snail's pace.

Looking at it more closely, the piece literally sheared right off, rather than anything becoming loose. To be clear, I didn't hit anything or run over anything. No dramatic riding.

So, has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas for fixing it, or am I stuck buying a $400 replacement part?

Pretty disappointing since I'm out of warranty and this isn't the first piece that has apparently vibrated apart.

Thanks in advance for ideas & input!

:dontknow: The bike has some miles and years on it... Since the fenders are unsprung weight; they're subject to whatever the road surface "throws" at the bike.

One of the guys that rides with us has a 2008 and the rear fender bracket has broken and on a recent trip out west the front fender brackets broke off and the fender went around the wheel and cut the brake line while he was doing 70 all he could do was coast to a stop.

THE FENDER BREAKING ISSUE

:gaah: ......I posted the fix for the front a couple of years ago, because I encountered the same thing caused by a combination of rough roads and blown shocks......Do an advanced search.......FRONT FENDER FIX ...etc ...............Mikeguyver

Yikes good thing he did not have to use those brakes in a hurry.

I wonder if cost of MFG is cuprit here and cheap lighter materials subject to cyclic loading is causing the failure.

If the OP would post close up of the fracture face one could see if it was a brittle fracture or a fatigue fracture. The fracture of either will have distinct characteristics. That may lead to the root cause.

Here's what you do..!!

pull the fender support and take the parts to a welding shop. They tend to fit back together like puzzle pieces and a good shop can weld it and reinforce it. This has happened and there are threads and posts here about it. You can also shop around for better prices new or used...

Agreed.

A good weld will penetrate the metal completely and be stronger than it was originally.

:agree:..The 2008 GS's are 7 years old now so things like that are going to happen...So better Pre Flight Inspection and preventive maint are in order to avoid any mishaps on road..

:gaah:...For starters it would be nice if you identified if this was the front or rear fender.? ? ?......The repair is completely different ......I posted the fix for the front a couple of years ago, because I encountered the same thing caused by a combination of rough roads and blown shocks......Do an advanced search.......FRONT FENDER FIX ...etc ...............Mikeguyver
