I bought Baja Ron's brake pads last week and changed out the pads. My old pads had what I think was an anti rattle backing plate but to install the new ones I had to leave them off since even fully compress the new pads are too thick. I called Ron and he had never heard of the backing plates before and said it would be ok to leave them out. I used a liberal amount of anti rattle on the back of the pads. I then did the recommended brake in procedure after that, ran the bike nice and easy for 70 miles, then did 10 hard stops and goes in a row. I could smell the pads cooking so they got nice and hot, lol. I have to check it out more but so far I do not notice any great improvement in stopping, time will tell. From the perspective of difficulty it is one of the easier maintenance tasks to do (the front).
The old pads still had 50% life but I wanted to try the new pads. When I changed the back pads at 17K there were close to being done. I know there are two wheels in the font but you would think that the back would not wear that fast since most of the breaking is done with the front.
Regards,
Randy
