F3 shock on a 2013 ST?

These are on eBay right now:

Wondering if anyone knows if they will fit a 2013 ST (length seems the same and the bottom mount appears the same width on each machine), and if they are significantly better than the "Fox Podium" shock sold for the ST?

I would think they would fit and work very well. Same frame/suspension components on both machines. Just get an eye to eye (centered) measurement of both and you will have your answer.

I have researched that the eye-to-eye (ETE) measurement for the F3 shock is 17 11/16"

It will take removal of some bodywork to measure the ETE on my ST, and my time is severely limited. If someone can provide the ETE distance for a 2013 ST front shock, I certainly would be grateful.

So, I asked the smart folk at Elka if the F3 and ST could use the same shock. Here's what I was told:


It's almost the same...

Front 2013 RS
17.677" long

Front 2015+ F3S
17.638" long

Spring rate and spring length is different. The RS use a 10" spring and the F3S use an 8" spring.

Spring rate for the RS is 225pnds/in
Spring rate for the F3s is 320pnds/in

Several points...

One is the length, then the mounting then the spring. If you get the first two the third is adjustable. Then the tedt ryde will tell you the rest of the story...if you do it give us a report.....:thumbup:

decision

I opted for a very plain vanilla decision.

Even though it seems the lengths of the two different shock applications are essentially identical, given the wide variance in spring length and "poundage" between the F3 and the ST shocks, rather than chance buying something that could have been wildly wrong :yikes: I took the simple cheap upgrade:

a set of lightly used 2015 ST shocks (Fox) off eBay for $195. Should remedy the notoriously inadequate original shocks BRP put on the 2013 ST, though still far from being the ultimate choice I could have thrown big bucks to obtain.

If I decide this bike is a long-term keeper, I'll go see my friends at Cogent Dynamics in Asheville, NC, and let them do the job with science rather than guess work.
