There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. F3 Limited Break In Period

I want to ensure I am doing the break in on my new bike correctly. Do I need to ensure that I do not keep a constant RPM on the bike for the first 600 miles, but what about the speed. Maximum speed for the first 600 miles? I ask because my HOV lanes are maximum speed of 65 mph's. If I do not keep a constant RPM can I ride between 65-70 mph's. Thanks.

Well

What I read said not to apply maximum throttle for the first 600 miles, and don't run at constant RPM. That part is tough when you get on the freeway and set cruise control

The best way to get the rings to seat fully and quickly, is to use the engine's compression. Warm the engine up, use second or third gear, run it up to 3500 or so and chop the throttle closed letting the bike decelerate using ONLY the engine braking, NO BRAKES! Then accelerate back up to the rpm again and repeat.... do this a dozen times or so, then park the bike to cool off. Then on your next ride repeat the process but then continue to ride it as you want. Use this process as you accumulate the first 100 miles. Then you're off and running!

Here's the thing....

Your best not using cruise control till you have broken the engine in. You can go any speed you want outside of wide open and your can run at a set speed a few minutes then let off then run back up again. I generally avoid freeways anyway cause they are boring though a faster way to get somewhere if your in a hurry....

Oh! I forgot one other thing: Let the engine run through as many "heat-cycles" as possible.
(Run it up to full operating temperature, and then let it cool back down...)

RE: Cruise control usage. Use it if you feel the need. Just bop it up or down 1 mph every couple miles or so. You can do the up five, down five and it should not adversely affect your road speed that much. Use the right lane if possible as a courtesy to others that want to go a "constant" faster speed.

Done this on all my RT's with no adverse effects.

Thank you I do understand all of it, but do we have a speed limit we should not go over on the first 600 miles.

I've never followed break in procedure except for the the 1 st 100 miles & even then I've exceeded it. After the 1st 100 miles--ride it like you're going to ride it- If my memory is correct I hit the 110 mph in 5th gear at 400 miles & had no metal on my magnetic oil drain plug--
That's my story & I'm stickin to it.
Not that the engines are related--but Suzuki & Kawasaki Mfg's both brought their highest performance bikes to a drag race 3 yrs ago. The Kawasaki had 1000 mi & the Suzuki Hayabusa rolled off the trailer with 200 miles on the bike--The Hayabusa has the same recommended break in procedure as the Spyder's, 4 cyl 1340 cc's with 4 quart oil system.

My understanding is to not red-line the tachometer early on. 3500 will give you at least 65 in 6th gear. You can go way over legal speed in 6th without getting anywhere near redline. Should be good to go for most people.

break in period Whats that??

my theory is, ride it like you stole it

I do the same it seats the rings in the pistons. I ride it like I stole it, too. Have done that with all my machines. Just do the oil changes to keep it all lubed up.
