There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Exhaust pipe crack

Spyder#353

New member
My new RT-S with 1,350 miles. Today on the high way I got an exhaust leak. Took the skin off at my shop to find that the exhaust pipe, from the front cyclinder had cracked 90% around at the welded seam. I've had a little vibration on the bike sense I bought it. I just thought that it was from the drive belt. Not thinking that it would vibrate enough to crack the exhaust pipe. Has anyone else cracked the exhaust pipe on there RT-S? My 08 is coming home from the shop. I'll just drop the RT-S off and ride the RS home. :chat: As far as cracks go this was a nice crack.

As was said, there have been others. Probably more due to bad welds and fitting, rather than vibration. I have not heard of any of the replacements cracking.

Mine broke in the same place with about 3-4K miles on the RT. The replacement has not broke YET. Now have 13K on the RT. Not a good place for an exhaust leak, directly under the gas tank.

Over 10K so far on my RT-S & no cracks that I know of. I ryde in hot, cold & everything in between & so far, so good

I hope they get yours fixed quickly & correctly this time round & you have no more problems

Broken weld on exhaust pipe

I too have experienced a cracked exhaust pipe. I did a little BDAR (for you non Army maintenance types, Battle Damage Assessment and Repair). I cut a piece of sheet metal and made an overlapping wrap around the joint and secured it with two clamps. The dealer has my new pipe and waiting for me to bring my Spyder in under warranty of course. They liked my repair and at first they couldn't find the crack until I explained to them where to look.

If you are out of warranty this would be the best fix. When the dealer replaces the pipe, I'm going to install a band clamp over the joint so it won't break again. You can get the band clamp from Summit Racing as well as other sources. I believe the pipe measures just over two inches so I'm using a two inch clamp as the next size up is 2.25 inch and would be to large. Summit Racing part number is SUM-692200.

While checking for both an oil leak and coolant leak after my 24,000 service, tech discovered a crack in my exhaust pipe on my 2010 RTS in the same location. Will provide an update when fix is complete.

Update on crack in exhaust pipe: 24,000 + miles on 2010 RT-S

Dealer replaced front header pipe and seal. (under warranty). Oil leak that I had referred to involved replacing valve cover gasket (fr cylinder and under warranty). Coolant leak was from leaking hose and fixed. (not under warranty). All problems corrected.

My 2010 RT sustained a complete break at the weld. After the new pipe was installed I also thought a clamp on the joint might prevent another break (as mentioned above) and bought a clamp from Summit Racing. I discovered that the two inch clamp was too small (the two bolts would not engage the threads on the other side) and had to use the 2.25 clamp which is almost to large. I haven't put a lot of miles on the Spyder since the pipe was replaced but no cracks so far.
