Exhaust leak?

New member
Hi all,

Have a 2013 RT with 3900 miles that has the heat issue recall done.
I *may* have a change in exhaust noise and metal parts where pegs attach are hot to the touch but this may have been the case all along.

I started thinking exhaust leak but putting hand around muffler flange which is the only one I can see below the trike there seems to be no pressure escaping when the trike is running. Trike runs temps at 4 bars at speed 5 in stop and go as has been normal for this ride.

Previous experience with a 10 RS-S showed that bike would making popping noise (extra air getting into exhaust before muffler/cat) and mileage would go to crap when the exhaust seals failed but that was not an issue until around 13k on that trike.
This one is not doing any of that (yet).

So I'm confused, if its not an exhaust leak and is in my head I'd like to avoid digging into the plastic as its a pain on the RT.
I'd have to ride 2 hours to the dealership anyway to get them to look at it.

There is no history of Y pipe gasket failure on RTs. There was a lot of changes from 2012 to 2013 but the exhaust is not one of them.

RE: RE: Exhaust leak?

Thanks Billie,

I'd be happy if it were just paranoia.
Will keep an eye/ear open.

Exhaust like smell coming out of left side vent right under mirror but not right.
Heat on left leg.
Should this be happening at only 4k?

Check the Left Side Exhaust Joint

There is an exhaust joint just in front of the fuel tank on the left side. I would check there.

There have been a few left side header pipes that have broken. Maybe that's it. Time to take it to the dealer.

UPDATE: Exhaust leak

Hi all,

Left Mr. RT at dealership on Friday.
Interesting ride, started out with slightly louder than before rumble and spent the last couple of miles sounding like lake pipes
Spoke with the Spyder man at dealership and he says that I have a split in the exhaust pipe.

He says in other bikes hitting a hot exhaust with water can do it sometimes but its not possible where it happened in the Spyder as the pipe is covered so it must be defect and it will (and should) be covered by warranty.
I forgot to ask him if it melted anything in there but hopefully will remember it when I speak to them on Friday. :bbq:

Best,
Y

Was it the left side header pipe like I said?

RE: RE: Exhaust leak?

Hi Billy,

They said it was a aplit in the pipe next to the weld that was on the left side lower down by the metal parts where the foot pegs attach.
Nothing melted and should be ready this week.

FYI, I had a split left header pipe on my 13 RTS SE5 as well.

6 weeks no spyder, very sad

The dealership says they were supposed to to have the pipe the 25th but now cannot get the pipe until the 11th
This will make 6 to 7 weeks in the shop depending on how much time they need to do the repair once the pipe is in.:yikes:

This is a dealer who I have have been doing business with for 4 years so I think they can be trusted not to hose me.
They feel BRP/CA are running into an issue and running low on the replacement pipes or that BRP/CA is doing an in-line engineering change because of some problem with the pipe.

I am very unhappy with being down for a month and change in the middle of Summer.
Summer is short enough in NY.

I like the idea of BRP/CA caring enough to make changes to resolve a problem, respond to consumer complaints.
Unless BRP/CA is planning a future recall and building up a parts inventory and I'm one of the lucky ones to have a failure pre-recall.
If not I thought silent recalls were illegal?

BRP/CA rep info please

I would love for a BRP/CA rep to get back to me or if anyone can provide a number and recommendation of someone to call.
I'd like them to explain how it is it takes so long to come up with a steel tube.

For the most part my experience has been very good getting parts quickly from BRP. It has happened often that BRP gets caught without proper inventory when demand for a part far exceeds what they expected. BRP also has a history of stopping the manufacture of a part, if they are working on an engineering change to improve that part. You may be caught in either one of those scenarios.

It is too bad the dealer did not offer to get the pipe welded while waiting for the new pipe to arrive.

Hi BB, thanks for the reply.
That unfortunately has not been my experience.

On my previous Spyder, which was also new, I lost a lot of time while they tried to find an oil leak since new.
They finally found it after having my ryde from mid-July to the last week in August.

It turned out the engine was assembled with a dry bolt at the factory and the oil was just riding the thread out while underway.
They "fixed" it by applying thread locker it the way it should have been at the factory but using a thicker grade of thread locker.
They did it under warranty which was great but it was in the shop for over a 1/3 of the total time I had the ryde.

I really like the Spyder but I think they really need to work on their QC.

I guess BRP reps do not read these?
Have not heard from anyone and no one has a contact?
You know, I have been recommending BRP for sometime now and I can confirm I have helped them with at least 8 sales for Spyder.
So much for loyalty, guess you get an HD if you want that.
