There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Dumb question from newbie

Hi all! Just bought my first Spyder in January and was able to sneak in my first ride last week. Our dirt roads here in southern MI are either ice or quicksand from Dec until May. The nearest pavement is more than a mile away, but we had a rare dry-dirt day and the potholes were only big enough to swallow a pony, so I got 'er out. What a BLAST!!! Bye, Bye, 45 years of riding two-wheelers!!

Anyway, for the stupid question: Can you open the front trunk while your engine is running? Since the key needs to be rotated west of Off to release it, how do you not kill your engine?

Thanks!

Yes, just push the key in and rotate it counter-clockwise like you would with the engine off. Just be sure to push the key in before rotating, otherwise you will turn it off. :lecturef_smilie:

Enjoy your :spyder2:

:agree: What Pam said.

:welcome: Glad to hear that you were able to spin the tires a little bit!
And there are no dumb questions: just incomplete answers... :D

Yup, that works! Thanks so much, everyone. I'd tried that before, but apparently wasn't forceful enough to have pushed the key all the way in. I'm kinda intimidated by all the computerization of this PC on wheels, so am being too light-handed. Thanks again!

TO THE NEWBIE

...:congrats:& :welcome:...Now for the really important stuff you haven't thought about yet :roflblack:...Like can the KEY break in the lock ....and what happens if it does !!!!!......IMHO, the ignition switch should only start and stop the engine........So I dis-connected the seat latch and have a separate wire operated frunk latch.......neither are hard to do and will save you about $ 400.00 in repairs once your Spyder is out of Warranty.......and the problem of getting it to the Dealer and leaving it there for a month or so until they get around to fixing it ........Mike :bbq:

This is great info, Mike. I too believe that all those functions shouldn't rely on the key. Thanks!

FRUNK RELEASE WIRE

This is great info, Mike. I too believe that all those functions shouldn't rely on the key. Thanks!
...Your a smart Lady ......I see you have an RT, I have one also and can tell you how to hook up the FRUNK WIRE if you want.....It's concealed so no one knows it's there .........Mike :bbq:

Fabulous. My husband is a wizard at this kind of stuff, so when I'm more familiar with the machine and get the guts to actually do this, I'll get your info for him. Thanks again!

Congratulations and Welcome! Mike's hidden wire is a great way to avoid breaking a key in the ignition switch when trying to open the frunk. Two preventive measures can also help running that risk. First don't fill the frunk so full you have to push down on it to close the latch; that will minimize tension on the latch when it is closed. Second, be careful pulling stuff out of the frunk that you don't have something drag on the gasket and pull it out of its track. A gasket off track won't allow the frunk lid to easily latch, thereby tempting one to push down on the lid and jam the mechanism. Good luck, ride safely.

Wow, more great info! Thanks, JayBros. As soon as our weather warms up enough, I think I'd better do this reroute. I didn't realize that opening the frunk could actually be the cause of the key breaking. That went over my head when Mike mentioned it. Wow.

Seriously? People have actually broken their key trying to open the Frunk?!? :roflblack:

I can't even imagine putting enough torque on a key to actually shear it. By hand no less? No leverage?

Maybe in a bench vice if you torque it with a Channel Lock. Certainly not by hand while in the ignition.

Sorry, I'm not buying it.

...To clarify, physical breakage of the key itself maybe not very common.....however I consider any damage inside the mechanical part of the ignition switch to qualify.....some people are EXTREMELY ANAL and if you don't specify everything PERFECTLY they will attack you.......( thank you Ms Pampurrs ).........I would actually be more concerned with the seat latch cable binding due to the way it's routed, it causes more binding.........JMHO.......Mike :bbq:

Thanks for clarifying, Mike.

Oh and yes, I am VERY anal. That's another word for educated, and therefore challenge statements that defy logic or physics, or don't make sense in any scientific fashion. :lecturef_smilie:

Welcome welcome....

And by the way...there are no dumb questions.:lecturef_smilie:a question is a request for knowledge and therefore can't be dumb....

Hi and welcome. If you are dealing with dirt and mud you should probably purchase the SpyderPops Belt Guard. He's a sponsor here.
