There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. My spyder is a 2013 RSS. 450 miles
sorry about the long explanation.

last sat I took my spyder to the dealer for a new battery. It wouldn't hold a charge long and after the dealer said it wouldn't test good or bad he replaced it. I bought it 6 months ago with zero miles for a great deal... Last one with good dealer incentives. I figured, being a 2013, it sat without being cranked much and the battery was bad. It drove home fine but the next morning when I started it the whole bike shook violently in forward or reverse. Only one cylinder was working.
I had to had it towed to the dealer who confirmed a cylinder wasn't working.
He called back saying I fouled a plug. Here's the part I'm struggling with.....
the service manager asked if I had ever cranked it and let it run without riding it. "Ever cranked it so the battery would charge?" Yes, who hasn't but with 450 miles and I'm not buying that's why the plug fouled. "He could tell because there was gas on the plug." The service manager said its in the manual not to do that and it is my fault.
He said spyders shouldn't be cranked unless you're going to ride them. I called BS and told him he needed to look for the root cause. The plugged was bad from the start if it fouled after 450 miles or it could have failed when gas dumped into the cylinder from me backing out of the garage. He wouldn't confirm any cracks in the plug or doing a visual inspection for defects. He wants me to pay for the plug and labor because plugs are maintence items. Again I called BS and told him he needed to warranty the plug and look for an ignition issue. In his mind since it cranked after throwing a plug at it that had to be it without any more diag needed.
He then asked if I wanted to have the first service done since I was past the recommended 300 miles. "He just read in the manual to do the first service at 300 miles." I ended the conversation there.
I called BRP and put in a ticket/case with the dealer. This guy is trying to get money out of me and doesn't have a clue what service after the sale is about.

Am I missing something and there is any truth to what this guy saying?

if your spyder has a ACE 1330 engine ... the FIRST service is 3,000 miles... according to BRP... read it in your manual .. most dealers don't know or maybe they know and just want to put their hand in your back pocket..
I think you are correct... at just 450 miles your problem should be warranty...

Sorry that this issue is interfering with you enjoyment of the new bike. Did the dealer check for error codes? A BUDS check is certainly called for with issues like electrical problems on a new bike. How long did it idle? Unless it was for hours on end I doubt that was the root cause. If this bike spent months on the showroom floor with unstabilized fuel in it that could be an issue. So could a defective or loose plug wire or a throttle body defect It really sounds like you need a new dealer. Not a good initial experience at all. Good luck resolving it, and let us know how it works out.

On a cold start the 998 engine appears to need a lot of fuel to keep running. It is not a big problem but not uncommon either to flood the engine. With a flooded engine it is always possible to start on one cylinder and the other stays flooded. So it is quite possible there is nothing wrong. Mine has flooded twice in 2 years of use.

As per maintenance schedule, go by the owner guide.

Sounds like...!!

you are in need of a new tech/dealer. Plugs would foul easily in the olden day when you had a manual choke on carburator engines. Being a fuel injected engine with no operator controled choke you problem is somewhere else most likely a coil or plug wire/plug issue. I always let the dealer do the first service so they have a record and the one I went to changed my plugs (or so they said) at 300 miles. This is a common practice on two wheelers with carburators and I had to battle with them cause the manual says nothing about changing plugs on the first service. Starting your engine and not ryding has nothing to do with it...:gaah:

Your first service is not due till 600 miles and I can not find anywhere that it says you can not start your engine and let it run without ridding it. Get a new dealer sounds like they are hurting for money.

Thanks for the responses,
There were not have any lights on the dash and the the service manager did not mention codes or that he checked. He was convinced putting a plug solved the problem and it was a maintenance issue. The service manager was defensive when I pushed back on plugs fouling at 450 miles being a maintenance issue. I asked him to contact BRP and he got an attitude.
BRP service has been good about this and they are contacting the dealer. They didn't make any promises but did say they opened a case and would follow up. The dealer still has my bike.
This is the only dealer in Savannah. Before my 600 mile service I'll find another dealer.

Coaster rider, thinking back the idle was off/rough but it wasn't bad. I didn't have to rev the engine to keep it running but I noticed the RPM's weren't steady at idle. I didn't mention that to the service manager either.

When my spyder is sitting at home not being used, I use a battery tender to hook up to the battery to keep the battery full charged and extend battery life.

Sorry to hear about your difficulties. :congrats: on your new 2013. The RSS is a great machine. Once you get past "glitch city," you should become a happy camper.

You have found one of those proverbial dealers from heck. 450 miles and he is trying to nickel and dime you? Its your fault? I don't think so.

Sounds like set up was not up to par. Break in service should be at 600 miles on the 998 engine. That will cost you about $300 bucks. The dealer is trying to be mercenary here suggesting that you do it at 450 miles. The dime would be yours then.

You should end up with a battery that works, and engine that runs on two cylinders, and a machine that runs trouble free.

Glad you made a case with BRP. Would also recommend a different dealer if not to far away. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeesh on some of the dealers.

2013 RSS has the 998 Rotax.

Bad gas?

If the bike sat a long time with gas in the tank, it could have gone bad. May even have some condensation in it, which would make the engine run rough until cleared out. Carburetors were famous for gunking up if left with gas in them a long time. Fuel injectors are usually not as badly effected. However, I have not heard too much about fuel injected engines fouling plugs like a carbureted one would. I had an ST1100 that acted like it had bad gas once it warmed up, but it was caused by a bad coil.

His dealer must touch himself. Idling foul the plug. It's fuel injected.
I would stay away from him:banghead:

You could be correct, but my dealer had one of his '09 demo's foul out from being started and not ridden because it was the middle of winter.:dontknow:

Velocity Power Sports in Ladson, SC. 151 Gateway Drive. Phone 843-871-5371. Good people - will not try to :cus: you. And, it's a nice ride from Savannah!!!

Would be more of fuel problem or computer than an idling problem.
My truck has 150000 miles on it and don't foul plugs when idling :roflblack:

It wasn't until the 2014 that BRP went to an alternator instead of a magneto. From what I have read, running the 998 Rotax at idle is not enough RPM to run a charge back through the system to keep the battery up. Idling just draws it down.

get a battery tender and keep it on all times your not riding it.:chat: and you should not need to pay that so called dealer anything, hope ever thing turns out good for you.:2thumbs:
