Friday was a pretty slow day but it was the first official day of Bikeweek and I'm sure the big group will show up today. I started my day doing a wipe down of the RT and checking for any issues it may have. It's funny that most my bikes look pretty good about 10 feet away but when you go over every inch of it with a cloth you realize the miles you've put on are showing up in the paint, there's just no getting around that other than not riding and that's not going to happen. At 52 I'm starting to show my miles too and that's okay, I'm thankful I have miles to show.
I drove around Daytona first thing after cleaning the RT and headed to the store to get some water and snacks. This is when I really like having the trailer. I bought two cases of water for 7 bucks and it was nice to throw them in a cooler full of ice and take off. I remember years ago I said I would never own a trailer and now I don't know what I would do without one. Never say never.
When I got to the speedway it was pretty windy but the sun was out and it felt great. I shot this little video of the demo Spyders when I got there.
As you heard in the video they made one change on the 2011 that I'm really excited about (I get excited pretty easy), they went to a steel adjusting ring for the shocks so that pretty much eliminated the chance of breaking that ring when adjusting your shocks. I know it a small thing but it's a big thing if you've ever broke one like I have. I don't know the part number but it would be worth looking up and changing if you adjust your shocks a lot. I found out they made some slight changes on the RT too that I didn't know about. They changed the time that it takes for the bootup screen to open, I guess by a couple of seconds. I didn't get a chance to time it but maybe I'll do that today. They made some changes on the hot start issue that some have had too on the RT. I've not had a whole lot of problems with that but I guess enough did so they made a change. I don't know if this is a software upgrade that the 2010 guys can get but I'll find out.
I will say the 2011 colors are sharp. I'm pretty sure the red on the RT is the same as the RS but there's so much of it that it looks a little different. The magnesium and alloy orange really look hot, they give it a really sporty look. If these were out when I bought mine I don't think I would have took a second look at my yellow Spyder, not that I don't like yellow I just like what they did with these colors.
The graphics on my RT were well received, most people thought it was custom paint. For some reason when I take pictures of the graphics it comes out a little purple but I can assure you it is not purple, must be something in the lighting. I did have several SpyderLovers tell me it looked better in person.
I thought this was a good shot.
The demo guys were pretty much booked up the whole day. This year they were trying something new and the guys I talked to said it was working much better for them, instead of preregistering you could just walk up and get in line to ride a demo. I would say from what I saw it worked well.
I spent most of my day talking with riders before they took off and then after they got back. A lot of the folks I talked with rode both the RS and the RT, the RT seems to be the one that most folks were drawn too and my guess it will soon be their biggest seller.
Here they are getting ready for a ride.
We had several members of SpyderLovers stop by but for some reason I forgot to take their picture, I'll do better today.
This is Annie's RT with her reworked Corbin seat. She's happy now that it was custom fit to her and it looks great.
At the end of the day I went around and visited some old friends of mine and then got a bite to eat. On the way back home I drove main street and it was pretty active. I got a lot of thumbs up and a ton of pics were taken of the RT. I think it was a hit for the most part. At the end of the road it started to rain pretty good so I came home soaked, if I was moving I would have been fine but if you're sitting you're going to get wet no matter what unless you're in a cage. It was a good first day and I hope to have a good report today.
