Monday Dec 10, a long day, Moriarty New Mexico to Electra Texas.
Sunday after hitting the breaks at 3:00 PM cause of heavy snow, spent the night in a Motel 6.
Leaving Moriarty early morning heading east into that HUGE White Light rising from the horizon temperature about 14 degrees and clear dry roads, I am making good time. 10 / 15 miles east on HWY 40 and roads turn bad, (glad I stopped yesterday) within a mile traffic is stand still or creeping along. What to do?? A bad trick I learned from China! Pulled to far right and proceeded along passing everyone. Conditions getting worse, finally pulled off the road at Clines Corner HWY 285 with side winds exceeding40 mph and drifting snow. Finally made it into the truck stop through the tangled mess of big rigs and cars snarling the parking lot, once inside for fresh coffee and an hour and half break to let traffic and the sun break up the snow packed ice roads.
Police everywhere cars in the ditches upside down possessions scattered in the Median. Police are escorting groups of cars for the next 15 / 20 miles. Finally the roads start clearing and speeds start picking up.
Good and bad news to all that!! Spyder runs great! BUT running in the slush, the belt and rear drive gear pack in ice and the belt starts jumping cogs. I am thinking STRADED!! But find an exit and quickly pull off to investigate the seriousness of the loud clunking noise the Spyder is making. SIMPLE solution ~ just add water and the ice goes away taking the clunking belt problem with it.
Back on the road and flying low with only gas and reststops. Dallas Fort Worth 300 miles, 270 miles, 200 miles, 170 miles, 135 miles, 9:00 pm and total fatigue sets in and I have to stop at Electra for the night.
