In 1998, I had a system with a Pentium II CPU, Windows 98, 8meg of RAM, and a 56k modem. It booted up in about 30 seconds and I couldbrowse the Internet. Pages loaded up pretty quickly. The pages mostly consistedof straight forward HTML, text and small advertisements using gif style graphics. I could also start up games like Tomb Raider 3 in less than a minute.
Today, I have a 3770K CPU, Windows 7, 16 gig or RAM, anda high speed cable connection. It boots up in about 1 ½ minutes and I canbrowse the Internet. Pages load up pretty slowly. The pages mostly consist of thousandsof lines of JavaScript initialization, multiple low end process, Flash andJQuery library loads, Style Sheets, dozens of large, externally linked Flash and .Net animated banner sized advertisements, virus scanner, and the viruses the scanner missed. I can load up games like Tomb Raider 2013 in about two to three minutes.
So much for progress:sour:
