Check engine light

Hey guys,
I decided to get a 2010 RT instead of the 2008 GS. Well I bought it in Vegas and had it delivered to me in Phoenix. It was delivered yesterday. I didn't ride yesterday because of my priorities watching college football. :2thumbs:

Well this morning I got on and the check engine light was on when I went to the grocery store. On the way home, the light was not on. Is there something about when it's colder, the check engine light will come on?

It was bought from RideNow Rancho in Vegas.

I have never heard that was a cause. Un-fortunately there are many reasons the check engine light will come, most reasons will not effect the operation of the system ( un-like LIMP Mode :gaah I suggest to clear the computer, to remove the Battery terminals for about 15 minutes.... When you put them back on I highly recommend that you put STAR washers on the bolts, they will never loosen on their own.... Then tighten everything, and start the bike .... When you shut it off.. use the key and remove it from the ignition switch.... leave key in glove box or your pocket ( glove box is better - it won't get lost ……also any V-twin spyder ( especially the RT's ) have a parasitic battery power loss, so I strongly suggest getting a Battery MAINTAINER and use it when you are not riding …. the magneto charging system is not the best and the battery can run down ….also :congrats: & :welcome:.. :agree: engine light comes on whenever there is any signal from one of the many sensors on there machines. In many cases once you stop and remove the key for any reason the light will be off when you restart. Only if the issue persists will it come back on and codes can be retrieved to see the source of the problem. If it does not come back on your good to go....Enjoy your new ryde and we are here to help with any and all questions....:thumbup:

If it comes on you should check for codes. You do this by pushing the Mode, Set and Turn Signal buttons all at the same time, with the key on. If the screen is blank there are no active codes.

I would suggest doing at least a minimal survey of your 'New' Spyder. Check the oil level (the correct way). Check the brake fluid reservoirs. They are sensitive to being even just a bit low. Check your radiators for leaves or other obstructions. Check your coolant level (a bit challenging but can be done). Check tire pressures being sure to got both front tires to the same pressure. These things will familiarize you with your new machine, if nothing else.

Don't trust that the dealership has taken care of all of this. Though they certainly should have.

It's possible that your Spyder has been sitting for awhile and your fuel isn't the best. I'd recommend filling the tank and putting some SeaFoam or similar fuel treatment in the next 2 tanks. This will help clean out the cobwebs that may have developed in the fuel system. Good preventative maintenance even if not needed.

Most of these areas are not related to your current 'Check Engine' light. But are just good things to do with any new-to-you vehicle.

I wound up taking it to the Ride Now in Phoenix. It turned out to be a dirty brake sensor. I rode a good bit yesterday with no issues. They told me if the problem returns, bring it back and they will replace the brake sensor.

:congrats: on your purchase of a 2010 RT. I started with a 08 GS and when the RT's became available bought a Premier edition #474. Put 36 K on that one. A much better ride than the 08 GS version. I currently have an 11 RT as one of our daily rides. Still going strong at 35K miles.

RE: Engine light: Sometimes....but not always...you will get an engine light glitch. As in, it will come on for a bit, then go out, and then nothing else. Hoping that will be your situation.

The additional advice offered by the others is also right on. Once you get the engine light sorted out...you should be good to go with miles of smiles.
