• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

CalSci Shields - My Experience

I wanted a touring shield for the cooler winter months. So, I started researching different brands of shields. I ended up ordering from Mark at CalSci because of the the fact that most of the reviews were positive and I appreciated the science that went into his designs. Mark was great to work with - very knowledgable and responsive. I ordered the medium shield and it arrived 3 days later.

The fit was perfect and, to my eyes, looks better than other larger shields I had seen. Under 60 mph, the ride was fine, although the wind hit me just above my eyes. However, on the highway at higher speeds, I though my head would come off and the Spyder did not seem stable.

I needed a taller shield, but the next size up was too tall as I did not want to look thru the shield. I worked with Mark and decided to try a shield that was 1" taller than the medium shield. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE DIFFERENCE!! The Spyder is rock solid at higher speeds (even MORE stable than with the stock shield) and I get just the right amount of wind. I can ride with either a full face helmet or a half helmet and glasses with no problem.

I wanted to publicly thank Mark for his great customer service, lightning fast communication/shipping and a really great product. Highly recommended - just make sure you get the right size!

I have had similar experience with the middle sized Calsci Shield. I am 5'10" and the wind was fine for me until I added the 4" risers. Now my head bobbles back and forth. My passenger gets bombarded with wind with lots of buffeting. If you went with the 1" taller than medium size shield I think that is the large shield. Did I miss something?

The actual increase for my new shield is almost an inch taller. The "Large" size is 1.5 inches taller than the medium. That may have worked fine, but I really only wanted a slight increase to get the wind out of my eyes. I also did not want the edge of the shield to be in my line of sight.

I do not have any risers installed. I am 5'7".

It made a big difference for me as well. Another happy windshield owner..

Thanks to all for the info! I've only been riding 3 weeks tomorrow - live in MN now after 19 yrs in Texas and am needing a touring windshield. How did you measure to find out that you only needed to add a inch for height rather than the 1.5 that the large size comes in? If I'm reading the replies correctly they must have custom cut it for you?

Very cool Spider on your Spyder :) John !

There is info on his site to help determine the size. I used that as a starting point but when I received the medium shield it was just a bit too short. Mark can cut the shield in any size you want, although I would assume he would not allow returns on custom cut items.

I am 5' 10" and have the 1" riser from BRP
I got the Large shield from Mark at CalSi and it works just fine.
Wind is just zooming over the top of my helmet at 70 mph.
Most that have one of these seem to like them.

Windshield Decisions

It is difficult to pick a windshield. I keep reading everyones post's and hope to make a decision. Until CHAD is available and reviews posted I came up with a substitute. I have a BMW R1200RT and have put a different windshield on it. Since the stock shield was just sitting in a box I tried to see how it would fit. With just a few holes drilled it fits great and doesn't look to bad. I still have wind on my helmet (I'm 5'11") but the wind on my chest is gone. I may just make it permanent. :2thumbs:

I thought about this with my spare R1100RT shield. Maybe I'll take a closer look. It opens the possibilty to fit other aftermarket shields for the BMW, like Cee Bailey's, or Aerotech.
