Burial At Sea

Received from a friend...

This is a VERY touching video, actually a piece of film that has been
made into a video, this is one that is NOT photo shopped, it's the
real scene!

Notice in the opening shot you'll see the gunner's position is all
shot to hell while the pilot's cockpit ahead of it is undamaged.
Later on notice the corpsman taking a fingerprint of the deceased
gunner, before the film continues, then showing the chaplain saying
the final prayers, followed by taps, then the sailors push the
aircraft and our patriotic airman over the side and watch it sink into
the distance sea. Here's one for a serious conversation with your
kids. THIS WAS REAL!

This is what 18 year old "kids" were doing in 1944. No safe spaces,
no hurtful unthinkable remarks that they couldn't cope with, just
dying for their country so the ungrateful, uninformed snowflakes of
today could act like fools decades later..............

This 2 minute video is pretty moving. Worth your while.

doing extraordinary things."

It is certainly a moving video, which I appreciate much. Thank you.

Here's the definition of a snowflake:

"Other than frozen rain, a "snowflake" is a term used to describe an overly sensitive person who thinks the world revolves around them."

Based on that definition, which is not mine, we have a number of snowflakes on here, and it has nothing to do with age.

There have been many moments, scenes, experiences down through history and in many countries other than the US, which make one reflect and marvel at the sacrifices that have been made in service of one's country. Young men and women, older men and women, people of every ethnic, cultural and religious background. I am grateful to all those who went before me to help create and preserve this great country - and those who continue to serve in many different capacities. I think of the firefighters who are risking life and limb fighting wildfires, police who face danger every day, many, many others who bravely and selflessly put everything that is precious to them at risk for a greater cause.

This is one of those moments and scenes from our history that do that for me, so thank you for sharing. BUT, I do NOT agree with or condone your biased, condescending and offensive conclusions about what this movie clip 'means' in terms of one generation being better than another.

Walk the streets at night in any major city in this country, and you might very well find out what the current generation of 15-20 year old kids are like. And you may not like it. My dad was a ball turret gunner on a B-17 over Europe in 1942. He was 20 years old, a Staff Sergeant, and flew 25 death defying missions in a plane that once came home with over 500 bullet and 20mm cannon holes in it. But get home it did, with all crewmen alive. The only death defying missions that some-not all- of the "current generation" undertake is how much dope they can shoot up, or how many people they can kill in a drive-by shooting. And speaking of biased and offensive? Take a look in the mirror and it will be staring right back at you.

As with every generation there are shining examples of what is to come and lost causes, good youth and not so good youth; there have always been examples of each.

I remember being told of an era when Elvis' swivel hips were supposed to destroy the country.

Celebrate the good people and offer help to those trying to rise above chaos, and no, not all can be saved unfortunately.

This was a repost from another forum that I belong to, there was NO bias, condescension or offense meant or implied. I am a veteran as well but did not see combat, I served in Pakistan.

This video has been on Youtube for a long time. The reason it was filmed was, I suppose, for newsreel footage of WWII and the terrible losses during that conflict.

The complete story is that the rear gunner of that plane was so badly shot up that he could not be extracted from his position. The ship's captain made the decision to give him an immediate burial because, literally, there was no other choice. A formal burial at sea is very much different than this but given the circumstances it was the only choice that could be made. The deck of that carrier had to be cleared and ready for action and that wrecked aircraft was fouling it.

BTW, the pilot of that aircraft did survive.
