Brembo Brake Conversion information needed...

Has anyone out there put Brembos on a Spyder that did not originally come with them? I guess i've been spoiled by the Brembos on the ST-L so was wondering what the cost would be to upgrade to the Brembos...larger calipers and all. If you have already done the conversion, or know approximately how much it would be, i'd love to hear from you. It would be nice to have them on the GS, but not if it's gonna set me back more than a couple thousand. I'm sure that i'm not the 1st to want such a conversion, so please share your experience with me if you've traveled down this path.

Also, the squealing is getting to me a bit...I wash the bike every 2-3 days, so I can keep the squeaky brakes away if I keep the road dust off the wheels...but figure there must be special brake pads to eliminate (or at least reduce) the squeaking. To recap, i'm looking for:

1) The approximate price of a conversion to Brembo brakes all the way around on an 08 GS.

2) What brand of brake pads (or other product) everyone is using to reduce squeaking. Does De-Squeak work? If so...for how long?

Thanks in advance;
Spyder Tony

Don't know..!!

about the brembos but when you do find out there is the option of disks and pads from BajaRon's he has EBC metalics which I hear make a considerable difference. good luck on this project..!!:thumbup:

Take the pads off and do this to them. Also coat the backs of them with anti squeal. The beveling of the edge will help or eliminate the squeal.

Sent from my Galaxy S3. I may have made a spelling error or may have some grammer issues. My fingers are way to big to type on this tiny screen!

Brembos are definitely good brakes, but the EBC conversion would likely be easier, cheaper, and work just as well. Good tip from RabTech on the pad beveling!

Calipers

I did look at the parts catalog and as far as I can tell the only difference between Brembo brakes and previous years is the front calipers and pads. Every other component of the braking system is the same. So my thinking is it can be done IF the calipers actually fit the space? (brackets? rims?)

Well...Billybovine gives me hope that I may be able to pull it off. If not, I'm going to do as Flanker suggests and look into the EBC conversion.

Thanks all

I think you need to look into the wheels also. the clearance is different between the 12 and 13 they will go one way but not the other. Oh well, you might as well go all the way with tires, rims, fenders and breaks. I personally think this would be a great upgrade, keep us posted.

Agreed...

I thought about that too...but if i change the fronts, i have to spring for a new rear tire too, as the rear is also 14". Would really like to go with 15s all around with fenders tires and brakes, but i fear it may be a bit rich for my blood. Afterall, i'm still paying on my '13 ST-L which i DID NOT get at the discounted prices. In fact...I thought i was savvy by talking the dealer down a grand off the sticker price!!!

Kinda sounding BajaRon is the cheaper and easier way to go. Not saying your cheap Bajaron! LOL All goes to plan I will have his sway bar and maybe even pads/rotors for next year.

:hun: The rear is already 15".

I get the sizes mixed up pretty often... I guess that it takes buying tires a couple of time to get it set in my head...

As usual, you are right, Bob. The fronts are 165/65/14’s and the rear is 225/50/15.

So, one has to wonder what will happen when you put 15" front tires and wheels on a :f_spider: that Nanny expects to have 14" tires and wheels? After such a change, the front wheels will be turning slower than Nanny expects and may upset her significantly. A couple of days ago, I had mine up on jack stands all around and was running the rear wheel to ensure the belt was aligned properly on the rear sprocket. When I shifted into 1st and the rear wheel started moving while the fronts were stationary, Nanny threw a complete hissy fit, gave me about 3-4 different error messages and went into lip home mode. Of course, once I shut it off and back on, everything was hokey-dokey.

Overall, I think it would be much better to go with BajaRon's EBT disks and pads.

Squeeky brakes are often a by-product of damp or wet brake pads. You may be washing too often and spraying the calipers too closely. Use brake parts cleaner to clean the brakes.

The 15" Spyder wheels little if any effect on the wheel speed. The taller wheels use a lower profilke tire to keep the total diameter approximately the same as the 14" wheels.

The 15" wheels with proper tires have about the same rolling circumference as the stock 14" tires. I know a 2008 owner that upgraded to the new wheels, tires, progressive shocks, "Ronbar" and new style fenders.:thumbup::thumbup: No Issues, just a great ride.

I've been looking for a thread that discusses 15" vs 14" tires because I want to put the 2013 chrome wheels and tires on my 2010 RTS. So it's been confirmed that they will fit inside the pre 2013 fenders and there would not be any issues with caliper clearance ?

That has been tested by a member in here, and it is correct...
You can fit 15" wheels on the pre-2013 bike without bloodshed!
The difference between the 14" & 15" setups is only 1.3%
(shorter with the 15")
