Brakes rubbing, warped rotor?

When riding I notice a rubbing noise coming from my wheel. I jacked up the front end so the wheels spin freely. When I give the wheel a spin, at one point in every rotation, I can hear it rub, and it eventually stops on that spot. The right is more noticable, but the left does it too. This can't be normal, is it?

What would cause this? I am thinking runout in the rotor, or the brake calipers not fully retracting. Any ideas? Anybody else experience this?

I read a lot of posts doing a search, but most talk of squeaking brakes. Mine squeak occasionally, but this if something else. It happens all the time, not when the brakes are used.

If, as you come to a stop, you notice the brakes are surging (more like a jerking motion with the whole machine) then you will probably have a warped rotor. I've replaced them three times already.

You have quite a bit more mileage on yours, but that still seems like too many replacements. Were they under warranty?

Mine only has 3000 miles on it, about a tenth of yours.

SpyderByter just jacked mine up and I hear the same thing, I also did my Yamaha FZ6 and it does the same thing not bad to impede the cycle but just enough to hear.

Oh only 345 miles.

Yeah, all warranty work. I guess with 37,000 km's I've stopped more than some people. LOL

So do you think it is normal?

I ask because my servive guy said his is doing the same thing, and he does not seem too worried about it. I am tho.

Seems to me that will wear the brakes prematurely, cause friction and heat which will not only warp the rotors further, but also mess with the acceleration, mpg's, and overheated pads lose thier ability to function properly.

yep and went more than most too

Thanks for the info. Gotta go talk to my dealer. Land n' Sea has been great with me so far. I di most of my own service, but they replaced the Rt front shock under warranty.

Really not sure if it's normal but I even jacked up my F150 front tire and sure enough it also made the same sound. :dontknow:

I have never see a disk brake that DIDNT rub slightly in one spot on the rotor, cars, motorcycles, atvs.....I have the same symtom on anything I ride or drive aas well as freinds rides. when the bike is jacked up, spin the wheel very slowly with just one finger, if you cant get it past the "dead spot" with just your finger, then look into it being warped. If you can get it past the spot, then dont worry about it, it's fine.

Like the VIspyderman said, if you feel surging when you stop, you prob have a warped rotor and should be looked at

:dontknow: I have 26,000 miles on mine and most of that towing a trailer and I have yet to warp a rotor.

I had to have my warped rotors changed out under warrenty at about 15000 miles. So I guess some have the problem and some don't. On the other hand my brakes don't make the irritating dump truck noise when stopping so maybe warped rotors are not all bad.

The guys at Land n' Sea marine looked at it and told me they will replace the rotors and install the new type brake pads under warranty.

It's not so much the pulsating when braking, tho it does do that.

It rubs noticably while riding. I hear it most when I pull in the clutch, throttle off, and not braking yet.

It's a shoop, shoop, shoop sound.

isn't that a song? :dontknow:
