So, last weekend I rode from Socal (Orange County) to Redding, ca.. This was a planned trip. It was 657 miles and a little over 9 hours due to gas stops.
Prior to this my longest ride was about 4 1/2 hours and let me tell you, my rear end was in bad shape by the end of that ride.
FYI I have the BRP comfort seat already as I am 6'4".
So I knew I had to do something to be able to do at least 8 hour runs if I wanted to. The stock setup with BRP comfort seat was NO WAY going to cut it. Oh and I am a pretty tough dude as far as dealing with discomfort and "hanging in there" so again, something had to change.
Knowing that, I took advice from others here and bought the AirHawk R. What did I have to loose to try it as they offer a 30 day return!
I also knew I would need to get my knees in different positions so I finally mounted the original Lamont NVB pegs I had bought from a user here in the for sale section.
Can I just say... FREAKIN FANTASTIC! The combination of these 2 things totally made the ride happen!
The sheer fact you can move the airhawk around to take care of "spots" is what made that a perfect solution. Before the ride I played with the amount of air in it. Yes what some say is true. It's not how much air is in it but how little. So before the ride I did have a chance to get the amount of air correct. Also too much air and yes... it is hard to stay in the saddle on turns. So you do have to find YOUR perfect air setting.
During the ride it was simple a matter of moving it a little forward or back to take care of hard spots that developed as I rode.
Now the NVB add to all this is a big way. I have the older model that is less adjustable but for me it was perfect anyway. Had I not had those, it still would have been rough. It is so nice to get your legs out or change knee positions. Most the ride I was on the pegs as it was all freeway with no traffic.
I will say the 150 mile per tank I got is perfect for get off time. I could have gone longer but 150 miles at 70 MPH turned out to be the perfect time for a stretch, drink, food, etc...
Yes I know some will say "floorboards" but personally I think they are ugly and I have a SM5 so not many choices in the ugly space.
Bottom line, I now am setup for long rides and I really happy with my setup :yes:
