There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Can anyone please tell me how to get that dog-gone air box cover off so that I can clean the breather hose oil out and change my filter. Also, there is a thread out there that I think Lamont put out about stopping or reducing this problem with a filter ad on.

Please, I have some degreasing to do here. A third or more of my radiator has oil on it.:dontknow::gaah::pray:

Thank you group, Ol' Bill Griff (OBG)

There are many clips to release... one in particular on the extreme right front corner as you sit on the seat is easy to miss. After you release all the clips remove the hose on the right front of the top. Then is is a matter of twisting and pulling... I pull mine out the right side. And it does take some effort. One 08 and one 09 are easy the other 08 is a real bear to get out.

Stopping the oil... Lamonster has a thread with the catch can method. I have a thread about using a clear filter tube with 200 mesh fuel screen on each side of the filter media. One method you have to empty the catch. I had three catch cans and they all leaked until I glued the bottom tube with JB Weld. You can have them for free if you are near me. The other method with the filter tube... no catch can to empty and they stop the oil migration without restricting air flow in either direction.

And there are several other threads on this issue. I didn't notice where you are but if you are close or traveling in my area stop by and I'll show you three clean air boxes. Ken krb1945

:agree:Had my air box completely out today [to change plugs] 10 thousand+ - miles with the foam in the breeder tube, Dry as a bone, 12 thousand miles on stock air filter it's still like new.
It's amazing that a 1/2 inch piece of foam can keep oil out of the air box.

If you have 12 thousand miles on the SAME air filter... You really should change it. :yikes:

I find it easier to get the 2 front clips of by wedging a long screwdriver in there. When you cut off the hose clamp put a normal screw type clamp on.
Ease it back and forth to the right side and it will slide out and the next time it will be much easier to do.
If you keep your oil level to only 1/8 to 1/4 inch on the stick your air box will have VERY little oil in it!!nojoke

Probably should;BUT=
Most of the time i follow Bob,s rule,:ohyea: If it looks good leave it alone.
Maintenance schedule's are over blown. And the Spyder's maintenance schedule is way over the top.

It all depends on the dirt, grime and pollen conditions where you drive. Particles the size of baking flower particles will clog the media over time. Miles and months are relative when driving in a clean environment and the filter media won't clog as quick. However, moisture in the air can damage the media which is part of the reason they say a certain number of miles or months. /Ken krb1945

You24824...

Fun getting that top out of there isn't it? I've got one 08 that is a real problem child where that air box top is concerned. /Ken krb1945

Burnt oil smell!!

A few times when riding at higher speeds, I have gotten a puff of smoke through the top near the handle bars and a smell like burnt oil. Would this be because of oil in the air box? I did put a little too much in at the oil change. It calls for 4 and 1/2 quarts and I put in almost 4 and 3/4. No codes or problems, just the puff. Thanks in advance.

Most likely.

Slide your hand up behind the radiator and rub the bottom of the air box,
If you get oil on your hand, that would be a sure sign of blow by [oil in air box] And probably the cause of the puff/smell.

This is the absolute true! I just completed a degreasing of the right side of the engine today. This included over a third of the radiator that was caked up oil, dirt and other debris. What was described as puffs of smoke, is what I got on higher speed right turns. This is what make me tear down the Roadster and do some 'house cleaning' from the air box to the ground. While I was in there, I decided to change my spark plugs. All went well. Right after, I took a 150 mile ride. NO MORE PUFFS OF SMOKE!!

P.S. Thank you to all the initial responders to my oiling and air box questions.
