6k maintenance...how much

just be careful they don't tell you that you need a valve adjustment for $800 or $900. At least two dealers have told people that
BRP requires that when most of us know it probably isn't necessary at 12000Miles

Mine is in the shop right now for this one and a whole lot more... When I hear what the damages are I'll be sure to report it.

Just remember, BRP has not OFFICIALLY posted the new valve check/adjustment table that I was told was coming. I can not recall anyone that had valves out of adjustment at even 18000 miles.

Our 2008 SE5, when checked by the tech at 43,000 miles before resale, it did not need a valve adjustment. I had never had the valves checked or adjusted. I know of one owner who paid for the service and was shown by and HONEST tech when he started having issues, that the valve covers had never come off. We each have to make our decisions on trusting our dealer, but some are really questionable when there is no proof of a service being done (except if you know what to look for from the outside of the engine). As for me, I change my own oil (Royal Purple, 10W40, Automotive Synthetic) and filter and ride my Spyder. I don't suggest anyone else do that, but it has worked for me.

I just picked mine up today after the 6,000 mile service.

Total bill was $369.16 and $285 of that was labor. I have a service agreement so my cost was zero.

The parts cost of $84.16 represents the oil, filter, hose clamp and gasket.

OK, Just got this done yesterday for $324. That included replacing a burned out tail light (they didn't charge the labor for it, just the parts). I had it done at Fred Cummings in Bakersfield, which is where I bought it. The price quoted by Jet World in Castaic was outragiously higher than that, so I'll stick with Fred Cumming's crew. Interestingly, they told me the 12k checkup would run $600. He said that after consulting BRP and owners they narrowed the price down from the $2000+ it would cost. I'll have to save my pennies up for that one.

I have done all my own maintenance for 14,000 miles and anyone can if they follow the How To Stuff and do or make sure the service bulletins are adhered to. I,d rather have the $1,000 in my pocket for a needed repair after the warranty has expired than pay the Dealer and Wonder??? Just how much they DID DO?

Costs are all over the board depending on which dealer you go to. I had the valve check done on my 2008 at 12,000 and that was over $900.00. After that, dealer said he would check his and has found no need for valve checks at 12,000 mile intervals. I was going to have my current RTS done at 36,000 miles--if I get that far on it. I just had a year end service at 20,000 miles and my cost was about $250.00. I'm ready to go for next season.

36,000 miles will be about 1 1/2 to 2 years at current mileage rates. Or--will they come out with something that causes trade in fever before then?

IMHO--avoid valve checks early on unless you have obvious engine issues.

I tend to agree. Valve clearance problems are obvious for the most part, and don't cause damage right away if you are paying attention (and the exhaust valve metalurgy is good). If you want to avoid possible warranty questions in the future, however, it would be best to get your dealer's blessing on extending this maintenance task interval.

Extreme Propulsion Inc

in Cartersville GA charged $269.51 including oil change. Amazingly, they got the job done in under two hours. Other Georgia dealers' estimates were as high as $500+. I was extremely impressed with the price and service -- especially when compared to my home dealership in Florida. He gets close to $400 just for an oil change....

Should be about $250 to CHECK valve clearances. Removing cams and replacing adjustment shims is a days work (if you have the correct shims in stock). I did mine myself at 24,000 mi and 2 valves had less clearance than spec. If you don't do the required preventive maintenance checks, don't expect BRP to pick up the $2500 repair when you burn a valve. IMHO

BTW, adjusted all valves to max spec clearance while I had cams out and gas mileage increased by 2 mpg?!!!

I just had my 12,000 mile service done yesterday. I had to drop it off the night before because they said it needed to be "cold". Price for labor + parts was a little over $700. Thank goodness I don't have to do this again for another 12K miles! Guess I'll start saving now for that one!

Oh--and that was w/out oil change. I had my oil changed last week and it was $170. :gaah:

I know from 20+ years of BRP jet skies that labor is what keeps the shops running! They are "Really "cashing in on the Spyder? :hun:
