What falls off is the mirror glass itself. It's attached by a plastic central post to a pivot joint on the housing. That plastic post gets brittle and breaks. From my experience working for a company that does plastic molding injection and talking with one of our plastic engineers, injection molded plastic can be unknowingly weak or brittle if the injection process is improperly run. Shoot the mold with the wrong pressures or temperatures at the wrong times in the process and you could end up with bad plastic. Many times that's obvious when the machine spits out the product. Sometimes the product looks good superficially but it isn't good structurally.
Unfortunately, I don't have a pic of the broken mirror. I was going to make a YT video that showed everything. I went to my dealer yesterday to have them look at the mirror and order the part. It turned out that they had a replacement on hand and did the swap in 10 minutes while I waited.
I do have some video footage of riding with the broken mirror assembly. I'll upload that sometime in the next few days.
