• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

    It can catch you out if you're not paying attention: Walmart has, side by side on the shelf, two different flavors of Mobil 1 MOTORCYCLE oil. One is made for wet clutches (Mobil 1 4T), one is for Harleys (Mobil 1 V-Twin) which have separate crankcase, primary, and transmission oil supplies.

    One thing that has occurred to me.... whether the oil has an infinite life in the crankcase, what about the filter? The typical oil filter is made of paper, cardboard, and glue... I wonder if the filters have a "use-by" once put into service?

    Is it related to the CANbus system? Such that (like many computerized systems) it had to take a deep breath and reset completely after a disturbance? Hoping that's it, and not just some gremlin which could come back at an inopportune moment.

    It's quite possible nothing changed... except the manual. My Sportster manual called for (as I recall) 3.6 quarts of oil. It kept spitting oil up into the airbox. Later the factory issued a bulletin stating (in essence):"Oops, the oil capacity is actually 2.9 quarts."

    You can find generic torque numbers based on the size of the bolt and the thread pitch. Look for a chart on line (Fastenal, Bolt Depot, etc.), or in Machinery's Handbook. At least you'd be in the ballpark.

    Torque specs often are stated for "clean, oiled" or "clean, dry" threads. If you put on more lube than specified, the recommended torque value will result in more tension in the stud (less friction to overcome). In extreme cases it can over time pull the nut through the wheel or pull the stud...
