September is starting very Fall like here in Anacortes, WA. The sky is light gray but allowing some filtered sunshine through. Just barely enough to cast shadows. Currently it's 64 degrees with 76% humidity. There is a 5 MPH sea breeze. The high today will be 68. The best part of being old when September rolls around is that I don't have to go back to school! Well here in Vermont, we will have damp, dreary weather with tapering light rain drizzle today, give way to a quiet, cloudy night. Attention then turns to Wednesday afternoon and night, as a more dynamic weather system brings widespread rain, heavy downpours, and embedded thunderstorms to Vermont and the North Country. Much of the region will be under a Slight Risk for Excessive Rainfall due to localized heavy rain (0.75 to 1.50 inches) while the Storm Prediction Center highlights a Marginal Risk (Level 1 to 5) for isolated strong storms in South Western St. Lawrence Country, as drier, cooler air arrives for the weekend.

Wednesday

Temps in the upper 70's. Clouds dominate early with a few morning breaks before a dynamic weather system approaches from Ontario. Showers develop in the St. Lawrence Valley by early afternoon (40% Chance), with scattered thunderstorms building late afternoon into the evening. But the later in the day we get, the more likely rain and thunderstorms occurring will be. Higher atmospheric energy over South Western St. Lawrence County carries a Marginal Risk (Level 1 to 5) for isolated strong storm producing localized gusty winds. Highs reach the mid 70's in valley locations.

Night time temps will be in the low 60's, with widespread rain and embedded thunderstorms sweeping across Vermont and the North County overnight (90%). High atmospheric moisture will support torrential downpours with rates of a quarter of an inch to an inch per hour, bringing localized ponding on roads and low-lying flash flood concerns under a Slight Risk for Excessive Rainfall. Total rainfall of 0.75 to 1.50 Inches is expected with the highest totals focused along the spine of the Green Mountains.

Thursday, temps will be in the upper 70's. The heavy rain departs to the East early Thursday morning, giving way to clearing skies from West to East. As a trailing cold front crosses, a few isolated pop up showers or a rumble of thunder remain possible on Thursday afternoon (60% chance), primarily across Southern Vermont, where brief afternoon sunshine develops. Highs will likely reach the upper 70's.

Night time temps in the low 60's. It will be partly cloudy over night, as drier air filters into the region. Lingering isolated showers chances (30% chance) should taper off, with lows dropping into the upper 50's to low 60's.

Friday and beyond will be cool, seasonable weather over the weekend before returning to mid week rain.

We have a front coming in here at Anacortes. This morning it's partly sunny, wind at 15 and gusting to 27 MPH, 62 degrees and humidity at 75%. Rain is forecast to start about noon and last until about 10 PM. The high today will be 67 degrees. Tomorrow, I leave Anacortes and head to Sequim, WA. The easiest way there is to take the bridge from Fidalgo to Whidbey Island, then take a ferry from Whidbey to Port Townsend. That ferry is often disrupted and cancelled by strong winds and tides. Good advice about the heat, @Little Blue. Every year dozens and dozens of people die from heat related problems in the Phoenix area. It's not something to be taken lightly, especially for us older folks.

This morning in Anacortes it's mostly cloudy with the sun poking through a little. Everything is wet from the overnight rain. Currently it's 57 degrees, humidity at 80%, and the breeze is 9 MPH. The high will be 66 today. I'm sad to leave my summer rental, but I'm looking forward to visiting my sister in Sequim this afternoon. It's a good travel day. Stay safe..... Jim
