• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Can't get it back into ECO Mode - am I missing a step, or is it dealer time?

New 2018 RTL owner with an Eco mode question… not knowing the service history, I left the bike with our local dealer for a safety inspection. Their recommendation was to replace the back tire. We did that. Had the bike out today for the first time after that service, cannot seem to get the bike back into Eco Mode. The manual says to hold the mode switch for a couple seconds… am I missing a step or does the bike need a return trip to the dealer? Oh, by the way I’m really enjoying the ride coming from 2 wheels. ECO Mode slows down the throttle response time and limits total throttle opening to 60%. Is said to cause carbon buildup on valves. Recommend not to use.
 
About the only thing ECO mode might be good for is slick roads. Muddy dirt roads or paved roads with water standing. The slower throttle response might help prevent slipping and sliding.
 
I tried it when I first got my F3S. It just made a slow bike even slower.
I turned it off and never fooled with it again.
 
Appreciate the intel that running in Eco is not recommended. I’m mostly trying to determine if there is an issue here that might indicate a larger problem. Next ride I’ll try Gwolf’s tech at 45 MPH. Rusty
 
I know mine you have to hold it in for a couple of seconds for it to change before you start moving. Can't remember if the engine is running or not, but I think not... maybe! LOL. I used it when I first got mine, but after 1000 KM I turned it off and left it there.
 
ECO mode is some designer engineer's futile attempt to increase MPG, or simply create a selling point, I think, because it's nearly useless. Mine goes in and out (on/off) with a simple push of the switch. Occasionally, I've noticed that sometimes it doesn't change modes, and if you didn't notice it on the screen, you may never know it didn't change. That's how ineffective it is. You have to experiment with it a lot to ever really know the benefit it can make, because it's very, very my-noot. I've played with it a lot and found its value is difficult to determine. Maybe 2 MPG's over a full tank of fuel if you're careful. I consistently get high MPG's, but if you are quick in the wrist, you'll likely never benefit from using it. I run it 80/90% of the time, but I kick it out in heavy traffic, particularly when I'm passing trucks and slower moving traffic, and when quick throttle response is important. I might add that I run stage II, which is WELL worth the $$$$.
 
I seldom use eco, the times I have, I just pressed the mode button and released. This works at any speed or even from a standing position. I don't know why it was recommended to do it while traveling at 45mph+. Once you get it in eco mode you can decide if you prefer that mode.
If it doesn't engage I would get it checked as you mentioned.
 
Didn't really recommend that method, it is just the way I do it if I ever put it in ECO. Already up to speed for most of the secondary roads and just switch to ECO mode then if there is rain or wet roads. Mine will also switch at any speed. Sorry if there was a misunderstanding. I was only pointing out that if the ECO light didn't light up on the dash screen, you would never know it changed at all, unless you noticed the lack of immediate power during the next stop and start.
 
When I first got my Spyder I tried it. I felt like it made the downshift a bit different, but that could be me. So after using it and babying it I decided a week or so later to just ride it like I did my Victory. Well in a normal type way. Fuel mileage about the same and I didnt feel like I was going to get run over.

On your dashboard, is there a icon that shows ECO mode?

If the icon is ON, there is a visual indicator (an arrow) on the screen to tell you when to shift for best fuel economy. It runs a "detuned" engine map for less aggressive acceleration.

Activation: to activate it, hold down the mode button on the left grip.

The ECO mode is designed to maximize fuel efficiency by suggesting optimal, earlier shifts through the arrow indicator on the dash and slightly restricting engine power or a "softer" acceleration. It is activated by holding the Mode button on the left switch cluster, displaying an "ECO" light, but is generally considered to only offer marginal, if any, fuel savings.

Ok, first off, I appreciate the input! Our group took a somewhat spirited ride last week, when I looked at the display while at speed in 6th, the RTL was in ECO without my touching Mode. But I was able to cancel that by hitting Mode while riding. Based on the advice here, I’m going to ride in non-eco mode, maybe I'll mention this to the mechanic next service. Next mod up… BajaRon shocks!
