• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Looking for a good GPS - Touring, no off road. Considering Garmin Zumo XT - thoughts?

I must be doing something wrong with my Garmin XT. When I import a route, either from Base Camp, Google Maps, or other sources, the XT will display the route but will not give turn by turn directions. Can someone explain the full procedure? Maybe I'm missing a step, or maybe I need to load it through the Garmin Drive App, which I haven't tried yet. I've had Garmin products for decades and this is the only one where I've never been able to get the turn by turn directions to work on an imported route.

Thanks in advance.
I have Cardo Spirit HD intercoms. I can get T-by-T and/or music from the Zumo XT or the Android phone directly or activation via the carplay/android auto display. My Cardo unit is bluetoothed to Pixel 8 Pro and the Zumo XT, and linked to my passengers helmet for intercom. Zumo has my music on a micro SD card and music is stored in phone memory. Cardo will mute Zumo or phone music when T-by-T directions come from either source.

There are a combination of settings in the devices to get this all working correctly. My latest project is to learn voice control over navigation, like continuing to next way point via android auto. I gave up most routing via the Zumo and use it as an easy way to select to navigate to HOME, other saved favorites, and to play music. And I like that it shows the speed limit on the map screen and gives warnings.

I should add if I create the route on the XT itself via the trip planner app it works perfectly. Comms are not the issue, the issue is the XT will not run a route that has been imported and give turn by turn directions.

@JohnRtl - thanks for the info! I just joined the UK Zumo Forum. Good to hear positive mentions of MRA since I'm hoping to transition to it as my sole route planning tool rather than using Basecamp for the Garmin and MRA for Apple CarPlay.

If you've got one of the 2020 or newer RTLs, the switched access you are looking for is under the plastic in front of your right knee. If you check out this accessory (highly recommended), there are pics to show what you are looking for.

@Sagebrush - there are a few reasons that you may not be getting turn by turn directions on the XTs

  1. If turn instructions are shown on the top banner, then the problem is with the mixer/volume level, or with the BT sound connection.
  2. If you load a track, rather than a route, and select Go!, then no instructions are given. You can load a track, convert it to a route/trip and then load the converted route or trip. That will give instructions.
  3. You load a route or trip, but no instructions are issued. This situation may arise if you do not allow recalculations and you stray from the plotted magenta line or if you have bypassed a via point. This often happens if you set off and the start point is behind you - as is likely with a group of riders - you cannot all be at the start point. You are on the magenta line but the navigation is wanting you to pass through the start point. With recalculation disabled, the satnav goes into a sulk and stops talking to you. To avoid this, always plot your start point some way up the road that you will definitely pass through. The Zumo will plot a route from your current position to the start and continue to navigate from there.

Even with Basecamp and a Garmin GPS, you need to pay close attention to shaping points when plotting your route. Otherwise the GPS will come up with a route that is different from the one you saw in Basecamp. And import that same GPX file into two different Garmin GPSs and you will likely see two different routes, unless you are very good with the shaping points. There is some science to it, but I think it's mostly an art

Oh yeah, be sure the map version you are using in Basecamp matches the one in your GPS.
