• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Do Tinted Helmet Visors diminish your ability to see out in the dark/night?

I am looking to replacement helmet this year and had a question about using a replacement visor which is tinted to help with sun and glare. Do they work like blacked windows in a car which you can see fine out of at night, or more like sun glasses which diminish ability to see in the dark? Thanks in advance.

I ride with an HJC C91 modular helmet.
It has a "sun visor" that can be manually lowered over your eyes when you're riding in bright sunlight.
It can be raised completely out of the way when you don't need/want it.
 
if you are looking for something like transitions lens then you want what is called a Photochromic Visor.

I currently have one on my Bell Qualifier DLX Mips Raiser Helmet and love it, Dark during the day and when the sun goes down it transitions to clear.

It is the one that I am wearing in my profile picture.
 
I purchased a "tinted" visor for my Shoei helmet around two months ago. It acts more like sunglasses to me. I do not like using it during night riding which is not that frequent. I like riding with my visor up with sunglasses on, but also I like the wind in the face.

Yep me too!! Best helmet I've had to date!
 
My experience is Yes! A tinted "darker" visor is hard to see thru at night. My Bell Mag 9 has a clear visor with a tinted drop down inside that is not too bad at night. The best night visor that I have had is an amber color, good for rain, too. Daylight, not so much!
 
I often replace my dark inner sunscreen with a yellow/amber one. Since I generally wear sunglasses, amber/yellow cuts down the glare and is nice on cloudy/rainy days. One benefit of the dark sunscreens is that you can lower them just enough to act as a peak.
 
I bought my wife and I Sena modular helmets which have the drop-down dark visor.
It works well in bright daylight, but I wouldn't want to try to ride at night with it down. :eek:

The 3 different visors that I have tried were not good for night. Nice during the day. So I don't use tinted at night.
 
I have a Shoei Neotec II helmet, routinely wear sunglasses with 2.00 cheater lenses to aid reading my GPS and only rarely use the tinted visor if I'm riding locally. The helmet instructions caution against using any type of tinted visor that might reduce night time visibility. YMMV.
 
Just to clarify, the modular HJC C91 helmet I wear has a completely clear face shield.

When the front of the helmet is closed, the clear face shield can be adjusted to several positions, from fully closed to fully open.
There is a small tab on the lower edge of the face shield you use to open it that works fine with gloves.
The control to open the latch for the front of the helmet is in front of your chin. You can see the red control in the upper left corner of the following picture.

Separate from the clear face shield is a dark sun visor that is controlled by a sliding adjustment on the top of the helmet.
Here's a C91 from the side with the front open, and the sun visor lowered.
One of the small black tabs you see on the top of the helmet is the control for raising and lower the sun visor.

Thanks for all the feedback. I do have a built-in, dropdown visor on my Shoei. During cooler weather it tends to fog easily, and if I have a pinlock on, the view is not as clear as I would like. Thank you.

I experience exactly the same fogging on my built-in tinted visor on my Shoei; the first Shoei did same thing. I wear a skull cap too, but it doesn't help the fogging. I'm accustomed to the pinlock and it doesn't bother me, as the majority of my less than full daylight riding is in the a.m. when it's continually getting brighter.
 
I haven't had any fogging issues.
The HJC C91 has an adjustable vent on the front and another adjustable vent on the top. With both open you can feel the wind passing over your face.
 
I use the Shoei OEM photochromic shield on my Shoei RF-1400 helmet. It works great except on overcast days when I still want a little bit of tint. I simply wear mild sunglasses on those days. Otherwise, it's clear at night and dark in full sunlight. I use a pinlock for anti-fog and it also works great. It's really the best of both worlds using the photochromic shield. It's not cheap but it's a one piece solution.

I have a tinted and mirrored shield for an AGV helmet that I also have. I never wear that at night. That would be extremely dangerous.
