Another Oil Change Thread for the 1330s

Just so everyone is on the same page, I am quoting the owners manual for a 2014 RT series Spyder (they all have the 1330)

First Oil & Filter change @ 3,000 Miles.

Next Oil & Filter Change (9,300 miles later or) @ 12,300 Miles or one year, which ever comes first.

Then Oil & Filter at every additional 9,300 miles or every year which ever comes first.

This is addition to all the other items that need to be serviced/checked/changed at these intervals.

I personally, after the first oil & Filter change try to change it at or around every additional 7,000 miles, just because it makes me feel better.

update (i just noticed that Lamont just posted this same thing in another thread)

:agree: Thank you Joe. Those are the numbers that have been quoted many times, and then they get changed by other posts.

Me Too! on your paragraph in red. I am also in the conservative camp.

:yes::yes::yes::yes:

The following also clarifies the graph from BRP which is shown from time to time. I also questioned BRPcare about it and the answer was per the manual above.

" Next Oil & Filter Change (9,300 miles later or) @ 12,300 Miles or one year, which ever comes first.

Then Oil & Filter at every additional 9,300 miles or every year which ever comes first. "

i know i am crazy but i like to do it every 3 k

That is perfectly fine, as long as you do it better than the manual says, you will be in good shape, remember to keep good records.

As far as the Crazy part ...................... sorry can't help you there. :roflblack:

I pay little attention to milage, since I am really only doing about 4 to 5,000 miles/yr these days. So I change the oil and filter every spring, when the real riding season starts.

Don't know..!!

but from most reports I have seen most oils tend to start braking down around 4,000 miles. I change it around then but I ryde her hard...

There's a difference between, "tend to start breaking down", and "That :cus: in the engine isn't able to do it's job anymore"...
Once a year, or in Ann's case: every 17 days!

I tend to change my oil (Mobil 1 full synthetic) in car/truck every 6000 km / 4000 mi.
Will stick to that with the Spyder as well...

We don't have that smog stuff down here..but I have an anti-smog filter on the crank case breather just in case....:roflblack::roflblack:

That's like saying we never get any snow around here, but i have two snow shovels just in case. :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

I change mine in the fall.

I'm new to Spyders, but on my motorcycles, I always change the oil in the fall. I do it right before I put them up for the winter. That way any sludge in the oil isn't settling to the bottom and solidifying during the long sleep.

Oil at 4,700

It will be interesting what Doc comes up with in his next oil test. If I remember correctly his last test was at 4,700 using BRP's blend 5w-40w. The test showed the viscosity had been reduced to approx. 20w. I'm wondering how long it will stay at 20w. In my experience when I've done the finger test on oils in a warm engine/transmission it never feels heaver that 20w and more like 10w. I've used 15w-40w and 10w-30w for years with little or now problems and changing it at 3,000/5,000 mile intervals along with the filter. I've never sent any of my oils of to be tested like Doc has. New recommendations call for ATF to be used in almost all of the newer transmissions/transfer units on trucks and SUV's. There are as many opinions on what oils are the best and when to change them as there are oils. To each his/her own it works for you. There are oils out there designed for only 10 miles or 10 minutes of use which ever comes first. Then there are oils designed to last for 9,300 miles or 1 year which ever comes first. However, I still want to see what Doc comes up with on his next test.

Even steven...!!

The odds of smog getting down here may be less than you all getting snow..:roflblack:
The odds of us getting snow are about the same as you all getting smog..!! :roflblack::roflblack:

Your oils probably last longer with the cooler weather...

Really I think you guys are wasting money. I used to change oil every 2000 miles years ago then every 3000. Now I go by the Mfg. recommendations and have no trouble. My 2013 Bug Convertible says every 13,000 miles?? even I think that is too long for a turbo.

The old Dino oils were not as good as the new Synthetics. Important thing is the new Oil filters which are much better than the old. It is not that the oil breaks down but that no particles are being continually circulated through the engine.

Just had my 3000 mile oil change and check. (actually 3500) Will do my next change at 12,800. If the factory recommends this and is warranting it that's good enough for me.

Not an expert on this (if there is such a thing) but my wife and I together drive about 60,000 miles a year on different vehicles and it works fine. My check and oil change at 3500 miles cost $389 at Ride Now Sports. I do not need to repeat this anymore often than the Mfg. recommends. jmo

Funny! I go by the book and change at 9.300 miles. My oil doesn't look too bad when I change it. The every 17 days would have been the case if I had a 998 motor last year. That would have been about 10 oil changes. :yikes:

I think you are missing some information...........When the engine and transmission share the same oil it's a whole different ballgame .....................PS, the Spyder does !!!!....Mike

REALLY !!!!

Ann, this is like taking a glass , putting it in a stream and filling , looking at it , it looks clear , then drinking it..................well good luck with that :helpsmilie:......Doc H changed His oil at 4700 mi. (BRP blended ) & after testing it revealed it had dropped to 20w from 40 w ...............My guess would be it got worse from there not better, so what would it be at 9300 miles ?????....................just sayin.......Mike
