Run out of Fuel

On my 2014 RTL.
I have the low fuel light come on at 1 bar
Then when the last bar turns off I know I can travel another 20 miles and not run out
I have done it twice and each time it took 6.2 gal. to fill
Don

I didn't run out but I must have been running on fumes last week, pulling my trailer. I think the light comes on when the next to last bar goes off. Pulling the trailer I figured about 15 miles per bar after the first 15 or 20 miles. I then got at least 10 miles after the last bar disappeared but the bike was still running when I got to the pump. Filling it up to the tippy-top I put in 6.157 gallons.

Try this..!!

carry a gas can with you...ryde till the light comes on..set the trip meter to "0" then ryde on till it stops. Read the trip meter and that is how far you can go that day...knowing your average mpg will give you an idea how far you can go. I get 30 on average so I get gas as soon as that :cus: red light comes on..:roflblack::roflblack:

Doc,

Was that "25 miles" with an earlier model? Apparently from the posts here the 2014 does not go very far after that light comes on. It would be interesting to know the difference, if any, between 2014 and pre-2014 models in this regard.

On my 14 when the light comes on I have just over 1 gal left. I have put in 6.4 once without running out, but have to say I was sweating that one.
I try and fill up within 20 miles after the light comes on.

so from what I have read -- on the 2014 they rate the tank at 6.7 gallons?

but you can only use fuel down to 6.2 until it no longer picks up fuel? -- seems that should be adjusted

we have gone over 200 with out the light coming on with my wife's 2014 RT LT. It seems we put in 5.3 gallons -- Spyder took just a tad more than my bike did

Specs vary. But normally what you get from the manufacturer is the total volume of the fuel tank converted to gallons capacity. But, this does not take into consideration the unavailable air space above and the fuel which the pump cannot access at the bottom of the tank. That's why you usually can't get as much fuel in an empty tank as what spec shows.

There are too many variables to give a definite answer to how far you can go when the low fuel light comes on. Pushing it beyond 20 miles is really asking for it though.

I can tell you that, as with most fuel injected vehicles, when you start to run out of fuel, you are OUT of fuel. It's like hitting the kill switch. Every thing stops right now!

Uhhh... What I mean is, this person who will remain nameless told me this is what happened. I would NEVER be so foolish as to let MYSELF run out of fuel just before the drag races at Spyderfest.... :opps:

I remember this.

In all the bikes I have owned, I have always been able to squeeze more gas into the tank than rated --

On this Spyder I have not been able to get the gas to stay in the filler neck -- it just creeps down -- this makes it difficult for me to get an accurate reading on the fuel mileage -- as I like a good reference point

I have filled it until it kicks off and then taken a lot of time to get it up to the top -- to no avail == when I think its there, it seeps away -- no puddle or over flow under the bike

You don't have to get the last micro-drop into the tank in order to get an accurate reading...
Just find yourself a comfortable routine, and use it!
Over the miles, any discrepencies in the filling level will be swallowed up within the averages... nojoke

Like Bob said: one does not have to get to technical with this stuff. I check mine most every time, fill it up to the same level each time and leave it at that.

I even round the decimals to the nearest gallon. 209.7 miles/ 5.6 gallons = 37.44642857. I call that 37 mpg.

My farthest on a tank so far, is 213.2 miles.
The bike took only 5.0 gallons, for a 42.6 mpg effort!
No doubt; these triples rock the house! :2thumbs:
I went 189 miles on 1 tank of gas, ( from Vermont to New Hamphsire) I am getting 50 mpg, and using 87 octane.

:agree: these triples REALLY ROCK WOHOO. Deanna

I can't believe you all worry about this mileage stuff.

I don't know that anyone is worried, it's just a subject of interest to many.

Now if we could just mount a windmill to our Spyders, we could generate power as we went down the road and have a perpetual motion machine!

How about running that through your super computer Bob! :roflblack:

This is a prototype and I will have it with me at SpyderQuest. I already have modifications I'll be doing to it. Will fit the 622 as well as others.

I think the manual says that when the fuel light comes on you have about 25 miles left (based upon currant driving conditions). Not sure how that little computer can crunch that much data. Sounds like BRP is CYA to me. I have rode about 20 miles after the light came on when I couldn't find a station and I was sweating it, let me tell you. btw: Consistently running low on fuel may shorten the fuel pump life since the pump is cooled by the gas in the tank. (unless BRP planned ahead and that 1/2 gallon of gas the pump can't push keeps it cool as you run out of gas) :banghead:
