BRP Side Deflectors

Installed the new BRP adjustable Side Air Deflectors yesterday. They seem to do a nice job of pushing more air toward me while riding. I got the "clear" version. They also come in Chrome. They have 3 fixed positions: Fully Closed, which is equivalent to the original, fixed deflectors. Half-way, which technically does not deflect any air - they are in a neutral position. Third, is the Fully Open position, which pushes air towards the rider. I haven't ever had or used the Baker Air Wings, so I'm not going to try and compare. Given the size of the Baker product, I would imagine they deflect more air. But these blend with the Spyder nicely. Here are pics of the 3 positions.

They work really well; hubby installed them yesterday on my new '14 RT and today we rode through the Mojave Desert in temps ranging from 89-113 degrees. I alternated between position 2 and 3, and loved the increased airflow.

One question I would like to ask, behind the side deflectors I can see a black grille, what is the purpose of that grille ?
Is it to let hot air from the engine escape ? if so wouldn't a closed deflector as comes as standard inhibit this grille performing at it's maximum capacity ?
With the deflector in the 2nd or 3rd open position you have a flow of cool air going past the grille, this will in effect assist by drawing the warm air out, just my thoughts.

yes i did make a post about that NZS i have 2013 and my legs where getting hot well i found out that is was because no wind was getting to them i removed the factory ones fixed the heat on my legs i also noticed that the bike ran one bar cooler on the highway

Not sure what that vents for, but I've had a set of the clear ones on since the bike was new and they work fine for moving the air around. I also like the way they "blend" right into the Spyder's original looks :firstplace:

The oem 2014 has two vents, a left and right, seen as the black grilles. The clear deflectors in the oem configuration will tend to pull air from under the upper bodywork as the vehicle moves forward. The design appears to put the grilles in a natural low pressure area.

Yesterday, not the hottest day, but pretty warm. We took the Spyder South to an event for the wife. I decided we would hit the nearby Spyder dealer on the ride home. The dealer had these adjustable vents new in the box in their options area of the showroom. Got a price, but held off.

We made a few stops as we followed A1A north along the ocean from Ft Lauderdale back to West Palm Beach. At one stop, my curiousity got the better of me and I removed the left and right clear oem deflectors. I did this to see how much increase the airflow would be.

There is a difference, the wife noticed it. Myself, I could feel the air wrapping in to the driver area sooner, but overall, not a big change. I'll probably reinstall the clear deflectors, then decide if I'm in with the BRP optional ones or just tough it out for a bit longer.

yes i do when you use panels like the front 2 they had to know how much force was in it to keep them from popping off them panels only pop off if they are not installed correctly

I think that when the deflectors are closed (or the stock ones!), it probably creates a little bit of an area with some negative pressures... it might help to draw the hot air up and out... :dontknow:

Odd, exactly the opposite effect I got when installing the adjustable deflectors.

The deflector causes a low pressure area behind it and it also has a vortex behind that. This causes heat up near the vent to be sucked out!

Why did I test this myself? Because 2 weekends ago I installed the adjustable deflectors. I was running them fully open to get more air over my body. Let me tell you HOT FOOT! I couldnt figure out why I was now getting hot foot even on 70 degree days doing 65 down the freeway! I said to myself....... OK what changed? I never had a hot foot issue before at these kind of temps. Then I thought about it and decided to break out a few sail ribbons and stick them to the outside of the deflectors. Sure as hell, when they are closed heat is coming up out of those vents. When they are open heat is getting pushed down and coming out the lower side vent. Thus I was getting more heat than usual on my foot!

I basically confirmed this was the cause of my hotfoot this AM ride to work. This AM was overcast and about 65F. I had the deflectors open and noticed hot foot which normally I would NEVER feel on a morning like this. I reached down and closed the deflector. Within a few minutes the hot foot completely went away!

Now when I say hot foot it's not like painful or anything just that you can feel your foot and inside ankle getting heat I normally did not feel.

So just an FYI to my experiences with the adjustable deflectors.

We have them our RTL now going on 3 years.... They help keep us cooler and warmer depending on the position. I would not be without them here?.
