• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Another Reported Fire

I believe this was covered extensively in a previous thread. Remembering my firefighter training and physics class, and for refresher, gasoline has a flash point of -45F. Flashpoint is defined as a temperature above which the liquid produces vapors which can ignite or explode. This may happen without a spark or flame. Ignition temperature also applies to a hot surface (exhaust pipe) that will cause vapors to ignite.

Now, bearing in mine that gasoline has a vapor density heavier than air, it will sink and spread out. Vapors are what ignite when gasoline is poured out, such as putting gas on a pile of wood (dumb to start with). That is what causes the "whoosh" sound, the flame front traveling through the vapors. In training, we would drop a match in a container of gasoline and the match would go out without causing a fire.

Gasoline heated to the boiling point of between 100F-400F the vapors can be somewhat lighter. If the fuel tank is heated (we know what that is), it becomes pressurized. When the cap is removed, the pressurized vapors are forced out and up. Ignited, this is the "jet" effect you see.

Since there was an issue with brake cylinders I'll mention that most brake fluids have a flashpoint of 275F. So you can see that brake fluid on a hot exhaust pipe can ignite.

fire

the bike was a 2012 not a 2013

and if was mine my contingent plan is open fronk if can be done safely remove anything I might want to save if I have time pop the givi bags off to save the items there

and let it turn to a puddle of molten metal and plastic

call the fire department at some point

then call for a ride

I

this was a 2012 with 16k miles just got back 3 weeks prior from the dealer doing 15k checkup and oil and tire change

the bike did over heat the weekend prior in stop and go traffic to the extent it shut down

not sure if this caused the issue when it caught fire but its sitting in the dealers lot now

if there is more info ill post also but at this time nothing

This says it was a 2012...wouldn't have had the heat recalls done.

If the vapors sink and hit hot elements, maybe the fuel door in the seat would be a better idea..Also could this have been static electricity?

GAS VAPORS

This is why I have my GAS tank double vented.......one line to the EVAP can and one to the atmosphere ( which also will take any overfill and dis-pose of it safely )........Mike .........................................When I open my gas cap I never get that WHOOSH sound :yes::yes:

That's the trouble with Facebook it is really hard to find things after they are posted. I saw this post and can't find it again but it was posted as a comment under someone else's post. I believe that it was in response to a post about an accident that happened with a Spyder last week.

ticket bait

if you must see whats writtin ill post the thread here without the header since it was posted in a closed group

fire

and her saying it was totally in flames

the main visible damage was the black part that covers the tank and the glove box area was flame damaged

Very sad to hope she is ok

I don't think I saw in the thread but what type of spyder was this? Sorry if it was posted just didnt see it.

Ann yes the post was in a topic where a guy scraped up his left front fender and damn it I can't find it now either. I also have not seen the post tx web rider posted so that must be in yet another topic. But at least we have someone tx web rider who knows the facts!

I am going to play ignorant and ask a stupid question - what the heck does the warning label mean by 'blower'? How do you manually run it as the warming advises?

Thats a sticker for a blower on a boat, I assume the poster was being sarcastic. Lol

I posted some pics about a year and a half ago on what I found on my 6mo. old RS with only about 2k miles.
The airbox has a tendency to push the main fuel line on the right side from the tank to the throttle bodies, up against the motor and rub. This is directly above the canister.
I had minor, but noticeable, rub marks in a very short period. I can only imagine what it would look like now....or after a few more years and miles.
There is no doubt in my mind that this would have worn through, creating a pressurized fuel leak....

I recommended everyone pull the airbox, check out the condition of that fuel line, and add some additional cut line to prevent rubbing and damage.
The advice fell on def ears then. Since then, we have found 2 more machines with similar "wear" on the fuel line. One machine we even replaced the line because it was worn pretty good. This was on a 2011 with about 15k.

Not trying to be an alarmist but something to put on the list of things to check out while the machine is down and apart for spring prep.

Do you have any pictures of those wear patterns? :dontknow:
They could be pretty significant.

Somewhere....I posted the ones from my bike on here quite some time ago. Since nobody paid any attention I didn't even bother with pics off the 2011.
But that's kinda the way this place rolls.....haha...
