What is the most expensive repair you have done on Spyder after warranty ?

Hi,

After 42000km , Spyder RTS 2010 SE5

my bearing start to make some noise.
my shock absorber no more damping (change two time under warranty)
my air suspension stop working
my windshield make lot of rattle (will try new pin from 2013)
my seat is just tear in front between the legs. (change 3 time seat for the tearing issue)

I call BRP and they tell me it's normal use, i will assume it's normal for the bearing. But for the other thing they have some quality problem. My brother got HD Wild Glide 2005 92000km , sometime i take is bike and he take mine and is bike run like new and look like new. No problem with seat, shock. Bearing already done.

My concern is how much will it cost to keep my Spyder. I have to pay for insurance, plate, 1 year of payment left.
And now some quality reparation problem i have to pay. And it's start to leave not much money in my pocket to put gas in it.

My brother change in is Harley all the oil each years. Front fork oil ,motor oil, brake oil, spark plug they put brake and new tire.
They change normal thing not like me. I'm thinking of selling my Spyder. I'm in Spyder family till 2008 after riding with GS first edition 22000km second RTS first edition #559 in 2010 42000km. Maybe i'm ready to have no more stress with a Road Glide. The only thing i'm sure is to leave the Spyder in garage ,like that it will not broke.

I have my vacancy in 1 month and i have to keep my money for vacancy. I can't put money again on the Spyder for this years. I will ride in Pontiac Vibe for vacancy. First time my Spyder will ruin my vacantion and from my wife it's will be the last time. I will stop for now. Am i the only one of thinking like that ? I will admit Spyder give good time.:chat:

Sorry to hear of your problems with the 2010 RT-S. I have a similar history. Had an early 2008 GS--the 2nd to hit Alaska. Purchased my 2010 RT-S (also a premier edition--#474) in 2010 when they first came out. Our RT's are 85 units apart in production order.

Have not had any major repairs other than regular oil changes, tires, and one valve check. The valve check service was the worst in cost, at about $800.00 plus other stuff I had done at the same time. Currently have 33,000 miles on mine.

I do agree that bearings and shocks are normal wear items. The fact that the seat has been replaced three times is questionable. That means you get an average of 15,000 KMS out of each seat before it starts to tear. I went immediately to an aftermarket seat, so cannot address the longeveity issue on the stock seat. The original seat I have (with the embroidered PE #) has only about 500 miles on it. Are you by any chance a "heavier" person? That could have some effect on the stock seats not holding up.

The repairs you mentioned above should not cost "big bucks" to put the :spyder2: back into condition that you want. I would recommend going to an aftermarket seat since your are having such issues with the OEM. An aftermarket seat will set you back $600 to a $1000 extra though. Another possibility is just have the seat redone at an upholstry shop. Maybe a couple hundred spent there will get you another 15,000 plus KMS or more.

Let us know how it works out.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I weight 170lbs 5'7 and my wife ??? lbs 5'6 (i don't want to ask) but less than 150. She don't want to bring Spyder to dealer before vacancy. Because she scare about the bill. I have time to convince her. She's making budget family. If she's give me credit card , i will make bankrupt. I will change myself the shock absorber and the bearing and pin for windshield .For air balloon i have workshop manual to make some diagnostic before to send it to dealer.

Did you know if you order the pins for the windshield for 2010 they will give the one for 2013. Or it will give me same . Because on 2013 it seem to be the best one.

Don't know how it's work but if a part on spyder 2011 or 2012 fit on 2010, maybe BRP will give the part for 2011-2012 or cheap old defect part for 2010.
And for the shock it is a improve one? What is better changing just the absorber and keep the spring or change both for Fox.

I have some money she don't know. Maybe i wil surprise her.

I know it is too late for you but this may serve as an incentive for others to purchase the extended warranty. I traded in my 2010RT with 59000 miles and it had two years left on extended warranty. Sorry your Spydr is going to ruin your vacation

RE: Weight: You are lighter weight than either one of us on our :ani29:'s. Based on that, weight is not a consideration when it comes to the seat tearing. Akspyderlady put over 7000 miles on her original seat before I changed it to a BRP comfort seat. No wear issues on that seat at all. The RT is a 2011. I don't have any fix from BRP on that issue, other than consider a different seat.

There already a thread for the seat http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?45449-Seat-tearing&highlight=tearing

I call BRP head office to let him know about the quality they say "Oh , Sir i'm sorry first time ear that."

I forget to tell you about my muffler is peeling. I let know to BRP same thing first time.

I repaint it with a black mat paint , the paint is use to paint block motor and it's stand at 1400f. Not peel yet. 1 years.

Now that the sun go down i will make some diagnostic for air bag. Here in Montreal,Quebec. It's very hot this week 32c-33c with humidity 40c.

Definitely use the better damped 2011/2012 shocks if you are talking the fronts. You can use the same springs, they have not changed...unless you find some takeoff shocks for a bargain price. Check with Pitbull or Cowtown. You also should order the 2011/2012 shock adjuster rings and the ring protectors. The original adjusters break easily. I believe the rear shock is the same across the board. The usual reason for loss of damping is a shock that topped out. There was a service bulletin for some 2010 RTS's to recalibrate the ACS sensor. The sensors were set too high, allowing the shocks to top out. Also be careful of your shock air pressure with the other models of RT. There have been some owners that have experienced loss of shock damping from other issues, but checking for topping out is a good idea.

I've had 2 post-warranty repairs that were right around a hundred bucks:
Throttle position sensor
Brakelight microswitch

So far; so good! :2thumbs:
