ILLINOIS HAS A PROBLEM WITH SYPDER

How can they sell these in ILL and have dealers there if the Spyder can't turn tight enough to pass the road test? Crazy!

Interesting story. I went to the DMV for my roadtest and they scratched their head and then took me out to a parking lot behind the office.

First: I was told to start at this line, and drive between the cones (74" in width apart) down a path of 10 cones some 15 feet distant apart... Okay! I balanced perfectly

Second: Now with the cones still at the 74" apart width they told me to weave between them? :dontknow: "It's physically impossible to make such a weave", I said. (cones 74" in width apart and 15 feet in distance apart)

That's when I took over the testing and said, "Put them back together the 14" apart (for regular motorcycle testing) and I can do this". Weaved in and out just fine. The trick of course to weaving is that once the front wheel axle reaches the cone, you can start cutting sharply and it's impossible for the rear wheel to ever hit the cones! I estimate that this technique is possible with the cones up to 22" in width apart.

Third: They wanted me to start at this line back behind me and accelerate to 15-18 mph, shift to 2nd gear, and then at another line, brake hard to stop at a third line.

This is where reverse wowed them. I backed up to the start line, then the SE5 wowed them, as I acclerated & shifted, and then the anti-lock brakes wowed them and I hard braked after going about 20mph (oops!) and never skidded.

They finally said come around front and we'll get the paperwork finished. PASSED 100%. Of course I changed the rules of the test.

In Arizona, the man giving me the riding test said that the u-turn rules only stated that I could not put my foot down. I was able to make it in one try but maybe your state does not say anything about using reverse in the middle of your u-turn.
Maybe you can preform a three point turn and since you never had to place your foot on the ground, you still pass?

This is out of the Illinois motorcycle handbook:
"Exercises 1 through 3 (Diagram 1)
These exercises test a rider’s ability
to start smooth, negotiate a sharp
left turn and come to a smooth stop
in a designated area. From the
starting point, ride up the course,
making a sharp left turn through the
lines without touching the lines or
putting your foot down"

It also states that for bikes over 500cc, you will have 24' for the u-turn. Are you not able to do a u-turn in 24'?

I would take the test, use reverse, then ask them to show you where it states you can't.

You can't do 24' with the bars at the stops on a Spyder. Nope.

That stinks! Can you go passed the DMV? What about the Attorney General? Any way you can call all the dealers in IL and find out who bought Spyders in the state - there's got to be other people in the same boat?

In CT you can take the Rider's Course (which I'd highly recommend anyway) and if you pass the course, they give you the certificate on the spot and all you gotta do is go to DMV and get your M put on your license. The test at the course IS the test. - Not that way in IL? Or is her back real bad where she shouldn't be on any two wheeler cuz the ones on the course are tiny light weight things.

Just trying to think of a way

You can do a course. It's impossible to get into this late in the year. But...this is really a matter of principle.

I too had a problem with Licensing

Hi

I am from Florida and had a similar experience with Licensing my :spyder: but the tester was not such a A--. When it came to making the turn even he said there is no way that you can do that on this bike but everything else has been ok and even if I got docked for the turn I would still bass the test but there would be a stipulation that the :spyder:was the only motorcycle I could drive. the motorcycle endorsement was only for the spyder not a two wheel bike. maybe this could be true in Illinois also why don't you try a different DMV I also had to do that because the first DMV said they didn't know how to give the test and I would have to take a drivers course approved by the State in order to get a license. I went to a bigger city than I live in and above is what happened I am pleased because I don't want to drive a two wheel bike any more anymore.

Hope this helps
Chuck.

After hearing all the problems you guys are having with getting a license i'm glad i live in TN i just hopped on the spyder they checked the lights/signals/horn and off i went (Around the building parked done) walked inside paid my fee's and got my Motorcycle endorsement.

pending va license

here in va, a MC license is required. i went to take the test but was a day earlier, va requires 30 days after passing the written and vision test. i asked a tester if i would have any problems with the course, her reply was if you know how to ride the :spyder: you should pass.
anyone take the VA riding test?

In Florida, just take a MSF course and then go to the DMV and get you full mototrcycle endorsement. 2 benefits - no restrictions on the ride and all can benefit from they things you learn in the course. :2thumbs::doorag:

In new yorkif it's got 2 or 3 wheels it's a motorcycle and the people at dmv giving the road test dont even have to have a motorcycle licence. Dont know how they can give a fair evaluation. In my opinion EVERYBODY should be required to take the msf coarse. i know for a fact there are a lot of people riding without papers. :chat:

[ i think you should move to a different state because that is a bunch of bullllllllllllllllllllllllllll:chat::chat::2thumbs: anyway best of luck to you and your wife hope you win this fight

I took my motorcycle license test on a Honda Elite 125 scooter. 5 points deducted. cause I made my U-turn too tight. They thought I was "showing off".

I think in IL you have to take your MC test on at least a 250 else you don't get the MC endorsement. BUT our MSC (three levels.. beginners, intermediate and advanced) are all free, pretty easily available and on first 2 levels bikes (and helmets, if needed) are all furnished. IMO everybody should take the course - then you go take your eye test at DMV and you're automatically approved. In my area they only offer the Advanced course twice a year but I try to make it both times. I never fail to improve on some skill and always have a blast!

Illinois Syder Road Test

My wife took her test on the Spyder with no problems. She had to do the regular motorcycle test except for going in and out of the cones. She has the 3 wheel restriction but who cares she can drive the Spyder and thats all that matters. You should try a different DMV. We too live in Illinois.
