Ohio couple killed

Very sad indeed. Any vehicle... especially motorcycles are able to get out of control and kill. Could have been operator error, something in the road, etc....

Lesson to be learned is to wear helmets and be careful out there.

Certainly there are dealers selling these to previous non-riders who may be more apt to have an accident compared to a long-time MC rider.

The Spyder is only as safe as you make it.......

It was a straight stretch and they had spent some time at a bar, she was driving and had 4 ONVI suspention and he had lost his driving privages for LIFE ..
So has any of this been reported as factual by the investigating agencies? :dontknow:
"Risk takers"... I'm also a risk taker if you count when she asks me if a pair of slacks make her look fat and I reply, "No worse than usual!" :roflblack:

Uh-oh! I gotta run!

I too was told that the Spyder was almost inpossible to flip in a curve. Lucky I've had a lot of experience on bikes an trikes.
I would not use the word lucky. Anyone driving safe and sober would realize in short order the trike has a feel to it when taking curves and would adjust & compensate accordingly. Experience might help you make the adjustment quicker but I would like to think even a newbie would catch on in short order (unless impaired).

...the quote above is trying to put blame on the dealership and salesman. When you buy a vehicle of any type, their job is to sell their merchandise. If you don't have the common sense to understand what you are buying and how it works and then go out driving it like you are an experience operator of this equipment you are asking for trouble.
I agree. My problem is look at all the stupid laws we have on the books to protect the dumbest among us. Have you read some of the safety labels they put on products today?

I live about 10 miles from this scene and went to investigate it. It was a straight stretch and they had spent some time at a bar, she was driving and had 4 OMVI suspensions and he had lost his driving privages for LIFE.
I assume what you are saying above is factual? Or heresay? To be honest, when I listened to the Channel 6 TV video I posted, the daughter does not seem surprised by the turn of events. Her demeanor certainly renders credence to what you have said. You comfortable this is true?

ONVI suspention
I assumed he meant OMVI (operating motor vehicle under the influence). Interchangeable with DUI (driving under the influence) and OVI (operating vehicle under influence). In Ohio we have had people arrested for operating lawn tractors and powered wheelchairs on the public right-of-way while drunk.

REALLY??? Do you honestly think there's a vehicle made that would go into this ditch and not flip??? Does a salesman have to tell you to avoid deep ditches?
SEE THE DUMB LABELS I LISTED ABOVE. BRP needs to put stickers all over the vehicle reminding people not to drive in ditches or leave the road at a high rate of speed or (the list goes on).

Certainly there are dealers selling these to previous non-riders who may be more apt to have an accident compared to a long-time MC rider.
There is a local motorcycle dealer who stopped selling ATV's years ago because he got uncomfortable with all the dumbasses who bought for their kids and/or themselves with little or no regard for safety. He just dropped his entire line of ATV's.

I usually tell people that, at speed, a conventional trike in a turn will plow straight ahead until the front wheel grabs then there is a good chance of it flipping. I tell them that, while the Spyder can be made to flip on pavement, it is much more difficult to do so. THAT BEING SAID, if you are moving at any kind of higher speed and jerk the handlebar too quickly say to the left, the machine will make a very sudden left turn and if you are not prepared, YOU MAY FIND YOURSELF GOING STRAIGHT AHEAD!!!!! The only time I have ever gotten my RT to act like it might flip was in a tight turn in a parking lot with a 220 lb passenger behind me (also near 220) and the high center of gravity was the scary:shocked:factor. I find the RT extremely stable and recommend it to anyone ready to give up two wheels! Down here, it may not sound like a Harley, but it will outlook it and outrun it every time.:p

Lots of speculation on what could of happened. Certainly an autopsy will reveal any chemical contributions.

BRP puts out a safety video for those at the demo tents but how many dealers do the same? I know mine didn't. You can see it on YouTube. Don't know if Lamont has it available here. If not maybe he should post the link as a sticky because I know there are many potential owners that comes to this site prior to purchase.

So how many of you people seen the video? Is it really worth watching? Maybe I will make this a poll.

PSST: How do you make a poll on this forum? I never see them. Pretty easy on the other forum.

I never heard of or seen the video.
Maybe i came from a different place in time,
But even if the dealer wanted me to watch it i wouldn't!

We always want answers, understandably, but sometimes accidents happen for no apparant reason.

The local ABATE V.P. was killed in a motorcycle crash a couple nights ago, he left a country club where he had voluntered to park cars for a charity event, travelled about a mile and hit a utility pole....40 mph zone, good responsible family man....no explanation, so far anyway, as to what happened. :dontknow:

We may never have the luxury of an explanation about these tragic accidents.

Watched all the ryding videos before I ever purchased my spyder in Jun 2008. Good reference for ryding the spyder. There are also training exercises available - they suggest practice in parking lots before venturing into traffic and normal ryding. They too are a valuable tool.

Accident...

Hey guys, I wouldn't be too quick to blame the accident on speed, driving beyond the limits of the machine, etc. Having spent my life in the medical profession and the last 8 years living in a retirement community, I can say that there could be a medical cause as to why the Spyder left the road. Unfortunately, we will not have access to the autopsy report. Medications that most older persons take...especially blood pressure medications, have caused significant numbers to pass out at the wheel and off the road you go.
Yes, common sense and reliable information about riding parameters are required for safe Spydering until then, I'm not passing judgement.:doorag:

I posted early that this couple was ONVI which they were at a bar most of the day and could not even walk to the Spyder, were told not to drive, call a TAXI but did not do that and finely got the RT started and went down the road. I think its funny one has to put lables on things for the stupid ones out there. One should us commend scence if one has any to use.

Let me translate for you...

I watched the hokey videos too. I am only saying hokey because the Spyder on my DVD was an RS not a RT which is the model I bought. There are differences. Regardless, the main points are the same I suppose. It reminded me of watching those videos in health class when I was a teenager. Very clinical and they used all the scientific terms, not the words that kids actually use. The information was presented in an informative way and very boring, but it really was not that long of a video. Plus I actually read the manual including all the driving and learning tips.

Since I trailered my Spyder home, the second day was really my first time riding any distance at all. Oh, and I was not falling down drunk.

I got a copy of the Can-am Roadster safety DVD when I purchased my 2012 RTS. Yes, I did watch it after I got home. Dale

I never heard of or seen the video.

My DVD was with the owner's manual, tucked in the frunk. Unfortunately, the ones that need to watch it don't. The ones that may not need it as much, will.

Video

I also received the DVD in my manual for my 2012 RT Limited. Is this something they are now including in 2012 Spyders but didn't in the past?

Very sad indeed... and as with most accidents with ANY vehicle... the main cause is OPERATOR ERROR. He mad a fatal error in controlling the Spyder, which was (according to the police report) affected by having alcohol in his system.

Very sad, but also very avoidable.

I guess the they need to include a COMMON SENSE training video with all Spyders......

I have/had two safety vid, one for a GS and one for the RT. I think I got them in intial package, but they have been sent to me.
There seems to be several stories about the events/life style leading to this crash and they all tend to say the same thing.
