To Alaska and Back...

Trailer

I am enjoying your trip report. I noticed you are pulling an America's Best Trailer. I've been considering one. How do you like it so far?
Thanks

The trailer is pulling great! Didn't even feel it in the cross winds. The only time I can tell its back there is when stopped on a hill and starting to go forward. It takes some torque to get things rolling up hill.

One reason we chose this trailer is because of its high clearance. Came in handy going through the construction zone. :2thumbs:

Montana

This is the first day since leaving Cuba we didn't get out the rain gear. Excellent high speed roads sweeping this way and that, lazily weaving through the hills.

We climbed up into the mountains just east of Butte Montana and crossed the Continental Divide.

Gassed up in Drummond and couldn't pass this up...
Did I tell you Montana is cattle country?

We settled down for the night in St. Regis Montana. A small logging town nestled in the mountains. This is a view outside our hotel.

The WiFi signal was weak, the people friendly. Had a great evening!

Montana, Idaho and Washington

Invisible Rain...

You can't feel it, you can't see it. All you can know is that you're getting wet somehow. The only way to tell is to look for the slight dimples in the puddles. Thats what we woke up to and thats what we headed out in.

We went up into the Coeur D'Alene Mountains. Nearing the Lookout Pass Summit, the drizzle turned into snow. It didn't stick thank goodness. This was our first experience riding in the snow. Pretty neat because we don't get much of the white stuff down south.

Just want to put a little mountain riding story in here... The first mountain I rode a motorcycle up was Mt. Shasta. It was terrifying and humiliating. It was terrifying because we were on the outside lane going around the mountain. The beautiful vistas gave me a bad case of vertigo. The humiliating part was semi's were passsing me. Going up hill.

Many miles later, have learned to relax, focus on the road and don't take my eyes off the road. Hubby and I had a great time doing the twisties coming off this mountain. Looking forward to more!

We came into the plains of Eastern Washington. Miles and miles of cultivated farmland. The traffice then swirled around, gaining altitude. Then back down to the most awesome sight. Moses Lake.

We are hunkering down for a couple days. Hubby is visiting with family and I'm going to expolore the countryside around here.

Milage thus far is 3,584.

Thanks for the input. Not too many mountains around here.
I am really enjoying your trip report and pictures. You are going through some really beautiful country. I used to travel up in that area when we lived in Colorado. I would love to be doing what you are doing.

Glad I could help. Not too many mountains around Houston either. This is a learn as you go sort of thing.

You're lucky to have lived and traveled in such a beautiful place. We tell the locals that they are so blessed to live in such a nice place, and they agree.

Don't count yourself out of the traveling picture. You never know whats down the road. :doorag:

Looks like you will be in good training if you drive Hatcher's Pass--They had a little more snow last weekend than your pictures--but will be mostly gone by the time you get here.

I'm originally from SW Washington, it's looking like you're going to miss my area, but I've been on that section of I-90 and would love to take the spyder on it one day.

you're also somewhat stealing my roadtrip idea. haha from San Diego to Deadhorse, to Key West, to Jacksonville, and back to San Diego...knocking out 5 Ironbutt rydes in one trip. :D

This is amazing, what a great ride! I'm with Mr. Bill, sometimes I think my place in this world is in Montana, too. If I ever run across him I'll snap a picture for you and say hello!

Don't know if we're doing Hatcher's Pass. Hubby is the navigator and he's off visiting family right now. We will be staying in Palmer for a bit though.

We timed the trip to be in Alaska after the snow and before the rain. Hope things have thawed out by the time we get up there. :)

I-90 going over the mountain was awesome! Its way different on a Spyder than a car.

Didn't mean to steal your thunder. It will be a neat to ryde from the northern most point of the states to the most southern point.

As for Ironbutts, lost mine years ago. Ryde safe and post pictures. :doorag:

Glad you like the trip. Montana is a great place!

It would be wonderful to find out what Mr. Bill is up to. Maybe he's a flag man on the construction site?:dontknow:

Wow! What an adventure Yazz!! Don't know how I missed this thread but I'm having a blast catching up. I'm going to subscribe so I can follow your daily escapades.

And if you're heading through our part of the country (Southern Oregon via I-5 or 199), be sure to let us know! We'd love to meet you.

It's a great time of season for adventure. Never know what's around the next corner. Enjoy your ryde. Thanks for sharing it with us.:2thumbs:

Jeff is the navigator. Couldn't have done the trip without him. Did I tell you I get lost easy? :helpsmilie:

Really, I didn't know that. :roflblack:
i

ROFLMAO Sure could have fooled me. "Get lost easy". Throw the Droid in the dirt and everything will work out fine.:roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::joke:

RE: Hatchers Pass If you are going to be in Palmer--you should take the drive to the top and back. Your only about 10 miles from the entry road. This part is paved all the way to Independence Mine--then gravel road. I would NOT recommend going over the pass to Willow. it is mostly dirt and pot holed road. The longest 50 miles you would want to drive. The scenery is breathtaking though. (Rocks in the drive belt are not good). I have done it by car--but would not on any kind of motorcycle. Keep on enjoying your trip.

The snow is gone--except for places like Hatchers Pass. It is usually not open beyond Independence Mine (almost the top of the pass) until mid-June. I have been up the pass twice so far this season to Independence Mine.

Hope you're having a good day, Yazz. Your posts give me something to look forward to checking every day. (Haven't seen your new hair-do yet since all your pictures have been of rain/cold riding with your helmet on - still waiting! :doorag:)

Don't think we'll be getting into Southern Oregon this trip. But then again, you never know what the coming years will bring. :)

Thanks for the heads-up. There is so much to explore in Alaska! Its going to be hard to decide what to do in the time allowed.:2excited:

Every day has been a good day! Even the rainy, snowy ones.

Wearing a helmet of baseball cap all the time now. Have a permanent case of helmet head. :gaah:

Eastern Washington - Yakima Canyon

The view outside our hotel.

Had the day to myself so did some exploring. Went down Yakima Canyon.

picture.php

This canyon has a personality all its own.

Its stunning scenery and sweeping curves lends itself to a leasurely ride.

When I got to the mouth of the canyon, turned around and went back up it again. Totally different scenery riding the opposite way.
